Global warming causing California glacier to grow, scientists say Last Updated: Wednesday, July 9, 2008 | 2:40 PM ET CBC News

The glaciers on Mount Shasta in California are growing because of global warming, experts say.

"When people look at glaciers around the world, the majority of them are shrinking," said Slawek Tulaczyk, a University of California, Santa Cruz, professor who studied the glaciers.

But the seven glaciers on Shasta, part of the Cascade mountains in northern California, "seem to be benefiting from the warming ocean," he said.

As the ocean warms, more moisture evaporates. As moisture moves inland, it falls as snow — enough on Shasta to more than offset a 1 C temperature rise in the past century.

The three smallest of the Shasta glaciers are more than twice the length they were in 1950.

I read that too fast and read "the sex life of the doll". Must slow down - reading too quickly.

As many as 90 per cent of Earth's mountain glaciers are getting smaller, said Lonnie Thompson from Ohio State University.

Yeah, or as few as 10%... I can make up numbers too!

There are an estimated (!) 180,000 glaciers on earth. I know that "academics" have a lot more free time on their hands than their working counterparts in the real world, but are we to believe that anyone has done a comparative study of something in the neighborhood of 162,000 glaciers?

Yeah, sure they have.

Wait, if it is GLOBAL warming, shouldn’t glaciers EVERYWHERE be melting?

Perhaps somebody should tell him that the oceans are not warming?

If they aren't warming, why are they expanding?

Ocean review finds warming on the rise

Interesting. Warmer ocean causes MORE WATER VAPOR. Water vapor forms clouds, that reflect sunlight back into space until they dissipate as rain or snow. And this NEGATIVE feedback is omitted from the climate models, except as an average over the entire globe rather than specifically as clouds form and disappear.

"As moisture moves inland, it falls as snow"

It takes cold to turn that moisture into snow. If this is due to global warming, where did the cold come from?

Retreat of glaciers since 1850

If you look closely at the following figure, Shasta is a shadow of blue surrounded by all the other orange and brown representing the other Cascade glaciers. There's one further north; I'm not sure which one that is.

Howdy! I’m enjoying my Iced Vodka and this story makes perfect sense to me too! Of course warming causes cooling. When it’s real hot out, and I open the freezer door, all the ice jumps out of the freezer and into my kitchen. Doesn’t this happen with all of you too?

It's not that simple, and cloud effects on radiative feedback are still uncertain. The type of cloud and its altitude are significant factors in ultimately determining if the effects of the clouds will be more importantly reflective or absorptive.

Actually, I'm a big fan of actual science (in contrast to Global Warming theories), and I think most science done these days is sound.

If anything, the Global Warming fraud does serve as a lesson of what happens when science gets politicized, and becomes more about politics and agendas, than actual scientific work.

Many people, including myself have tried to parody these morons by saying things such as this "scientist" said, but it is impossible.

I think in this case you misspelled "scientist" it should be spelled "Séance-tit"
