Obama Song Brings Back Memories

By Nonie Darwish FrontPageMagazine.com | 10/3/2008

I was born and raised as a Muslim in the Middle East and lived for 30 years in oppressive dictatorships and police states. I remember the daily bombardment on Arab radio of praise and songs of adoration of the Egyptian dictator president Gamal Abdel Nasser. ‘Ya Gamal ya Habib Al Malayeen, ya Gamal,’ that is Arabic for Gamal beloved by millions and the song goes on to say, we are following you in your road and mission. Day in and day out songs like that was chanted by Egyptian singers who competed to please the dictator, while citizens were oppressed and jailed while the country moved from a multi party system to a one party socialist system. Nasser was the hope for change to bring about Arab unity, destroy Israel and stand up to Western interests.

But Nasser’s hope did unite the Arab world and did not destroy Israel, but brought Egypt to its knees after defeat by Israel. I remember Nasser’s fiery speeches while adoring crowds listened to him saying that he will throw the Jews in the Mediterranean. Instead of Arab unity, he ridiculed many Arab leaders who did not follow him and actually went to war against Yemen where he allowed the use of gas weapons against a brotherly Arab Muslim country. Nasser’s regime which had great hopes for bringing Arab greatness ended up bankrupting Egypt, impoverished its people and loosing the Sinai in irresponsible gamble with wars with Israel.

The way some Americans regard Obama brings back such memories of total adoration and blind hope for change. The media in the US is certainly not government controlled like the Arab media I grew up with, but it has failed the American public. It practices self-censorship when it comes to exposing the mistakes of Democrats or even criticizing radical Islam. It depicts all Republican leaders as dumb and stupid and its favorite target for ridicule is Sarah Palin.

When I saw and heard American kids singing for Obama, I felt a chill of fear. The scene reminded me of how, as children, we were forced to sing for the dictator. It is telling that liberals have exploited children in this manner -- and that the mainstream media has given them a pass.

I came across this take earlier today on the now infamous Obama song (which can be seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlcIwvHZUl4 ).

The song is, as close as I can tell:

(soloist)

We're gonna spread happiness,

We're gonna spread freedom!

Obama's gonna change it!

Obama's gonna lead'em.

We're gonna change it!

And rearrange it!

We're gonna change the world.

(group)

Now's the moment,

Lift your voice to sing,

Sing with all your heart!

For our children,

For our families,

Making our voices one.

Sing for joy,

And sing abundantly,

Courage heart and soul!

Sing together,

Hold each precious hand,

Lifting each other up!

Sing for vision,

Sing for unity,

Lifting our hearts to sing.

(now as a cacophony of chanting, lines being added as others are repeated)

Yes we can! Can! Can!

Lift each other up!

(I can't make out the added third bit)

Change!

(then chanting together)

Yes we can! Can! Can!

(reprise of soloist after scene of families applauding and happy children)

I would briefly point out that, despite claiming to be "a recent Sunday... a neighbors house... venice california" the video is apparently a professional production.

It’s in BO’s Arab blood to like these songs of praise for the Leader, especially if it’s for him.

When I saw/heard it I see visions of Joseph Stalin being greeted by hundreds of Russian children offering him flowers, I see Kim of North Korea being sung to, I see Mao being showered with flowers by young Chinese. And then all the atrocities of there murderous regimes are visualized. I can’t look without tears for humanity and total disgust at the path our country is taking.

What I don't understand is the parents that allow their children to participate in something like this. Children do not fully understand the complexities of ideology and politics, and this is just a prime example of children that will adopt the politics of their parents because they don't know any better and have been brainwashed from a young age to adopt a specific ideology, not because it is right or wrong, but because the parents say so....

In this situation everything BHO stands for is inherently wrong and dangerous. Marxist-Leninist philosophy is inherently dangerous, there is nothing virtuous or good that comes from it.

The list of YouTube videos making the connection between the Obama and Hitler Youth is growing.

Blue is the new Brown.

Exactly, I was a schoolkid behind the “Iron Curtain” in the
50s before escaping in 1956. Thanks to my parents wisdom,
brainwashing did not work on me. But seeing those
children sing the praises of the leader (fuehrer?) brings
back chilling memories. Folks, we are slowly sliding down
slippery slopes toward socialism. Be afraid, be very
afraid. Change can work both ways, I am afraid Nobama’s
change will be for the worse.

My wife grew up in a communist country. She had to sing these same kind of songs when she was a kid. She was upset when she saw the video, because she recognizes this crap for what it is. She’s mystified as to why others don’t — people who were born free in this country and who have lived here all their lives.

Obama’s gonna rearrange it, alright.

Good for you and your parents!

Sometimes it seems that the people most determined to oppose this lunacy are those from places where it has reigned.

I guess being free all your life means you somehow have the freedom to be really, really stupid too. No chains are stronger than those that people forge for themselves to wear.

Yes, about the only thing that could’ve made the video creepier is if they’ve been dressed in Mao suits.

Incidentally, I’ve noted elsewhere that the din of chanting seems intended to have a hypnotic effect like it was something you’d find in a cult. Has your wife said anything about the song to that effect?

Hi Rurudyne, no she did not mention that. But she did talk about the uniforms, the hand gestures, the performance aspects, the signs and banners, the enthusiastic adult director who is at once familiar to the kids and a familiar of the state, the smiling approval of authority (parents / the state) — evidently these are all common “tools of the trade” when it comes to the indoctrination of kids.

When I first saw the video, I thought it was creepy, but I was at least a little willing to give the adults who put it together a pass. Misguided and dumb, but maybe their hearts were not too far off, you know? But when my wife got ahold of it, she said it was just too close to “the originals” to be an accident.

It still sounds silly to read my own words about “the state” and indoctrination, but she had to live with the Real Deal for many years. Her family went through some tough times. And when she sees something like this and says it’s bad news, well, what else should I do but pay attention?

But I myself definitely hear you on the cultish aspects. It’s just weird. I don’t think you’d ever hear kids singing songs about McCain! :-)

If you go to the frontpagemagazine.com article by Nonie Darwish, you will find my comment on it. However, I want to reproduce it here for my friends at FR to see, right from MadMax, The Grinning Reaper. Here it is:

Echoes of the past from silenced ears

Nonie: You bring us a very important warning as you have lived thru the mini-Hitler adulations, cult-like status, and war aims of Gamal Nasser, a man who actively supported the Nazis against the Allies in WW2.

The song you repeatedly heard was similar to those song by the Hitler Youth to the Furher, as well as similar songs heard at Nuremberg, the 1936 Olympics, during the Angschlush, the occupation of the Sudentland, Danzig and elsewhere.

My relativies in Lemberg, Austria, had to have heard them (the songs) during the angschlush (willing) occupation and unification of Austria by the Germans in the late 1930’s. For them, it may have been the last songs they ever heard as none survived the Holocaust. They were either shot in Lemberg (now Lvov), or died in the gas chambers and other Nazi killing machines of Belzec and Auschwitz concentration camps.

Hitler started out with a handful of fanatics and look what he achieved in gaining power, before destroying half of Europe and his own country.

Obama started out with a handful of communists, terrorists, and crooks, and look at what he has achieved.

I do not want a repeat of that by the new cult Furher/Commissar, Barack Obama, but the scent of a nascent marxist autocracy is in the autumn air. Hopefully this is not the “autumn of American democracy and freedom.”

I hope!

[Remember, the Germans willingly voted Hitler into office in a democratic vote, and recently the Palestinians voted Hamas into office in Gaza in a free election. Just because you vote someone into office doesn’t mean that they will remain an advocate of freedom, or never intended to in the beginning but successfully covered up their real aspirations and duped the gullible public. Just ask the Cubans. America is following this path to a “t”.

Look carefully at the Obama campaign to silence paid radio/tv ads and the display of bumperstickers (in Missouri). There is a “reek of the red” in the air.]

I think I can explain the parents:

First, understand that in the minds of many leftists, not only is there no God, there are no transcendent realities at all. The state, or maybe society, or humanity as an abstraction, holds the same place in their world-view as God does for the theist. For the American state-worshipper, Obama is obviously as messianic figure.

The little sing-along was simply a state-worshipping analog of having children in Sunday school sing “The Old Rugged Cross” or “Jesus Love Me”.

They are doing what parents do: attempting to pass on their beliefs, attitudes and mores to their children.

Be glad that folks of their persuasion tend not to reproduce.
