Obama's silence on the Gaza crisis is undermining his reputation in the Middle East
Guardian ^ | Simon Tisdall

Barack Obama's chances of making a fresh start in US relations with the Muslim world, and the Middle East in particular, appear to diminish with each new wave of Israeli attacks on Palestinian targets in Gaza. That seems hardly fair, given the president-elect does not take office until January 20. But foreign wars don't wait for Washington inaugurations.

Obama has remained wholly silent during the Gaza crisis. His aides say he is following established protocol that the US has only one president at a time. Hillary Clinton, his designated secretary of state, and Joe Biden, the vice-president-elect and foreign policy expert, have also been uncharacteristically taciturn on the subject.

Looks like the Messiah who just wants the world to love him is in for a rude awakening.

First, the Kingdom of Heaven did not arrive on November 5th; and now his natural apostles in the Arab World are seeing him as just another politician.

Supposedly Obama is planning a "major address" in a Muslim city like the one he gave in Berlin. Will he get heckled? Nah, he'll just have the Egyptian secret police carefully pick the crowd for him. But don't worry, as long as our Lord Obama feels loved, the world is just fine.

Oh and yes, I know this is an anti-Israeli article. Nevermind that. It illustrates Obama’s image problem. He’s alienated the pro-Israel crowd, and now he’s alienating the anti-Israel crowd. That’s what happens when you have no true convictions.

Obama's Silence on the Gaza crisis is undermining his reputation in the Middle East.

And that reputation would be?....

It seems the author thinks he has a reputation on foreign affairs.

Zero has no reputation in the Middle East, or anywhere else for that matter. He is an untried, inexperienced empty suit.

Really? That didn’t stop the Magic Negro from mouthing off against W during the bailout crisis. He needs to go back to Berlin and hold another “world conference”.

When it suits his image development.

Obama has a problem, all right. This is another problem with no clear answer, a heads, they win, tails, I lose, situation. So, Obama decided to sit it out and blame it on Bush.

The Seattle Times ran this as a front page article, complete with a picture of crying Palestinians. I had to laugh. Best of the Web had a good article about how the Israelis care more about the Palestinian people than Hamas does. If Obama had any guts at all, he would stand up for Israel.

Exactly—what reputation?

That being said, I take his silence as a sign he disagree’s with the current Administration’s support of Israel. If he agreed with the Administration, he could easily say so and no one would accuse him of preemptively acting as President. By keeping completely silent, he is in fact signaling that he disagrees but does not want to openly say so. Certainly, if his objective is to make the World “love” American again (as if they ever did), he will have to offer Israel up as a sacrificial lamb.

I really hope I’m wrong about this—time will tell.

He had no problem pretending to be president every day between the election and now. He apparently is more comfortable playing political games than speaking about major world issues with real consequences.

I have visions of him picking up a rhinestone heel and hurling it at a PM, saying, "You stop that!"

I was thinking the same thing. He has publicly said that he is for an undivided Jerusalem (oops!) and that he would fight back if his children were attacked, so why shouldn't Israel.

Seems to me they must be referring to his private reputation in the Middle East.

funny how he can come out and talk about all his future economic plans, etc., but REFUSES to address the Gaza/Israel issue under the bogus claim there’s only one president...blah blah blah.

He doesn’t want to say anything because if he says anything it will be in complete defense of palestine and he knows he’ll go down in flames taking their position now.

Hussein and staff have their wetted fingers waving in the air. He’ll make a statement just as soon as the “wind-blow” test results come back.
