This is Not the Freedom Tower: Money Trumps Patriotism in the Name Change to 1 WTC
New York Post ^ | March 27, 2009 | Tom Topousis

Freedom is out of fashion at Ground Zero.

Once hailed as a beacon of rebirth in the aftermath of Sept. 11, the Freedom Tower has been stripped of its patriotic name -- which has been swapped out for the more marketable "One World Trade Center," Port Authority officials conceded yesterday.

More than seven years after the terror attacks and amid an effort to market the tower to international tenants, sentiment gave way to practicality.

"As we market the building we will ensure that the building is presented in the best possible way," said PA Chairman Anthony Coscia.

"One World Trade Center is its address. It's the address that we're using. It's the one that's easiest for people to identify with, and, frankly, we've gotten a very interested and warm reception to it."

Debra Burlingame, whose brother Charles Burlingame was the pilot aboard American Airlines Flight 77 that was hijacked and crashed into the Pentagon, said the renaming of the tower is one more example that the nation is forgetting 9/11.

"If we can't say the word freedom out loud, God help us," she said.

"I understand the decision from a marketing point of view. But it saddens me that it's no longer economically viable to declare who we are."

The next time I see the the Port Authority Chairman (and I see him once a year), I am shaking his hand and saying, "Hello, Mr. A$$hat."

I think we should now start calling it the Tyranny Tower.

i don’t know - who is paying for it? If its private money they should name it so they can rent it and make a profit.

If its a government project without the intent to make a profit that’s different.

Erasure of familiar names is to coax us into believing US is about sacrifice, not freedom. Anything free can't be good to a radical like puppet Obama. Rules for Radicals by Chicago's Saul Alinsky.

heil, obama?

I don't understand it.

Freedom isn't marketable??? Are there too many potential customers out there saying, "Freedom? Oh no. None for me, thanks."

It shouldn’t matter what others are calling it - Americans should just call it the Freedom Tower anyways. That’s what I’ll do.

Why don’t they just go all the way and call it “One World Order Tower?”.

Personally I like keeping the original name, shows we're carrying on unfazed.

What bothers me is that the first WTC was built in five years. Here it is over seven years on and everyone's still got their finger stuck in.....

I don't see any value in having things named "Freedom" in a country where there is less freedom every day. It's a little too Ingsoc for me.

For example, if the building was named "Hugo Chavez Tower" and I could take my Leatherman on an airline flight, on balance I'd call that a plus.

I lost interest in the project when they chose not to rebuild the towers bigger than before.

When the “arts and croissants” crowd got involved, the project became a politically correct endorsement of the hate America mindset.

And don't get me started on the Muslim crescent in Pennsylvania.

Obama’s Volunteered Slavery Act considers 9-11 to be a holiday on which we promise to devote hard work to our country.

Goes hand-in-hand with the renaming.

Gotta wonder who is moving in. Name it “Freedom” and “some” object, apparently international customers.

Name it the street address, though, and it gets “a warm reception”, so apparently someone is moving in, someone “international”. Almost like someone said, rename it and I’ll sign the contract.

Any clues, FReepers, who it might be?

Gorbachev Foundation, Soros, CAIR, OPEC, Organizing For America?

I agree. I hate that I can't take a pocket knife on board like I used to. It was the only form of self defense available and they took that away.
