If I didn't know any better, I would think that the Young Earthers were militant atheists who were out to make Christians look silly. The bottom line is, YEC is just something to give "scientific" cover to dispensationalism. Many but not all dispensationalists teach that God will destroy this earth 7,000 years after creation, there will be a millennial kingdom before that, so therefore the earth must be around 6,000 years old. So it is ultimately about a particular view of eschatology and all the talk about "science" is smoke and mirrors.
