Light Cars Are Dangerous Cars

And other unintended consequences of strict fuel-economy standards.

If something seems too good to be true, it usually is. Such is the case with President Barack Obama's proposed national fuel efficiency standards for cars and trucks and a new tailpipe standard for C02 emissions. The national press has uncritically reported that the new standards will make cars "cleaner." In fact, the rules could impose substantial costs in terms of urban air pollution and human life.

The standards are designed to reduce C02 emissions from cars, with the twin goals of addressing climate change and reducing dependence on imported energy. Carbon dioxide is, of course, ubiquitous and relatively harmless on an everyday basis. It is only its long-term buildup that scientists posit will cause temperature warming. What are not so harmless in the near term are the "criteria air pollutants" currently regulated under the Clean Air Act -- ground-level ozone (or smog), particulate matter, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and lead -- all of which have been shown by the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) own scientists to have an adverse effect on human health.

Smaller cars are more dangerous?

Mr. Obama doesn’t care.

When is he going to begin driving around in a hybrid limo?

Never.

Besides, he’s too busy traveling around the world apologizing for the United States - the worst country in the world.

Well, if it’s such a dreadful place, how did he get elected?

I’ll be the mids at Annapolis are just dying to hear Mr. Obama speak at their commencement today.

Smaller car mandates are just another control on the people and families.

This is the goal, and it doesn’t matter how many die to achieve it.

Have you heard this one?

Q: Why is beer better than Barack Obama?

A: ‘Cause it tastes good, has a good head on it and won’t raise your taxes.

Don’t worry, they have already come up with the answer for this. New 30 MPH speed limits will make everyone safer, save fuel and reduce emissions all at the same time. (I would put a sarcasm tag on but I’m afraid it would be misplaced.)

I saw the “Smart car” going down the highway at about 75 the other day. It looked ridiculous. Like an egg on wheels. The thing gets 33 city and 41 highway and seats 2 people. My old Toyota minivan gets 24 mpg on the highway but it holds up to 7 people. I suppose my wife and I and the 3 kids would take 3 Smart Cars to go visit grandma..

BTW, the Smart Car weighs 1600 lbs. My Camry weighs 3000 lbs. My daugher’s Subaru Forester weighs 3,152. I don’t care what the government crash test show, there is no way I would ever drive (or have one of my daughters drive) a car that can get crushed by a Camry or a Forester...

I hear this repeated, but I wonder how true it is. If the mass of the car is reduced, then it has less momentum as it travels and collides with other stuff and so will do less damage to that other stuff, which may or may not be a low mass car. Whatever it is, assuming it isn't a tree, there will be people involved who will probably be more lightly injured than if they collided with a Mack Truck.

The list of “how” idiotic leftist ideas kill is nearly infinite ... beginning with DDT and continuing to the present.

For whatever reason, I believe the left are generally people nature never meant to survive or breed.

Minor accident for a leftist-orgasm-inducing Prius:

And as the enslaved peons are forced into extremely dangerous, overpriced, government-made little 40 horsepower plastic cars, the arrogant, power-mad democrat party politicians are chauferred around in very, very different vehicles:
