Jay Severin to return to airwaves Tuesday

After a month-long indefinite suspension following his offensive remarks about illegal Mexican migrants, WTKK radio host Jay Severin will return to the airwaves Tuesday, the Hub station announced today.

In a statement, station management said they have had conversations with Severin over the past several weeks about his “hurtful, inappropriate remarks” and that he understands the station will not accept “this type of commentary on our airwaves in the future.”

The station said that based on that understanding, they have agreed to conclude Severin’s suspension and he will return to his afternoon-drive show Tuesday.

“We want to emphasize that WTKK still strongly supports an open and spirited debate about the many issues our community and our country currently face,” the statement said. “There will no doubt be times when people disagree with what Jay says. Our goal is to maintain a level of discourse that is compelling and thought-provoking, yet civil and respectful. While we will not always succeed in walking this line, we will continually strive to do so.”

Severin was suspended indefinitely without pay April 30 after calling illegal Mexican migrants “leeches,” exporters of “women with mustaches and VD,” and the world’s “lowest of primitives” when talking about the swine flu on his show.

Station management also sent a email to listeners that quoted Severin saying, “Thank you for my job.”

“Jay regrets the remarks for which he was suspended and understands that his comments were indeed wrong and hurtful to the Mexican and Mexican-American communities,” said the email to listeners.

Now if Jay had called conservatives similar names it may have landed him a seat on the Supreme Court.

Here is WTKK’s statement, according to the Radio Equalizer blog (which describes Jay as being “neutered” by WTKK
management)

>> On Tuesday June 2nd, at 3 p.m., Jay Severin will return to the weekday afternoon timeslot on Boston’s Talk Evolution 96.9 FM-WTKK. Jay regrets the remarks for which he was suspended and understands that his comments were indeed wrong and hurtful to the Mexican and Mexican-American communities. Accordingly, we feel it is time to end Jay’s suspension and welcome him back to WTKK. All of our hosts have strong opinions and talk radio is a format for open and spirited debate about the many issues we face in Boston, New England, our nation and our world. There will no doubt be times when you disagree with Jay - and our other hosts too - but our ultimate goal is to maintain a level of conversation that is entertaining, compelling, and thought-provoking, yet civil and respectful. While we will not always succeed in walking this line, we will continually strive to do so.
>>
We hope you’ll experience what Jay has to say this Tuesday and every weekday from 3 to 7 p.m. Many thanks for listening to Boston’s Talk Evolution 96.9 FM-WTKK.
Warm regards, WTKK Management

Having crawled on his belly and eaten enough poop Jay is provisionally allowed back on the air.

Talk show host Severin to return to air, despite comments on Mexicans
May 30, 2009
By Martin Finucane, Globe Staff

Controversial right wing radio talk show host Jay Severin, suspended for a month for making derogatory comments about Mexican immigrants, will return to the airwaves Tuesday. He regrets the remarks and understands they were wrong and hurtful, his station, WTKK-FM, said.

“He understands that we will not accept this type of commentary on our airwaves in the future. Based on this understanding, we have agreed to conclude Jay’s suspension and he will return.” the station said.

Severin was suspended April 30 after calling Mexican immigrants “criminaliens,” “primitives,” and “leeches,” and saying Mexico’s leading exports included venereal disease and “women with mustaches and VD.”

Severin also called America “the magnet for primitives from around the world,” and said hospital emergency rooms had become “essentially condos for Mexicans.”

His remarks sparked a firestorm of protest, led by organizations such as the Massachusetts Immigrant & Refugee Advocacy Coalition. Some sponsors pulled their advertising and said they wouldn’t resume them if the station reinstated him. Some observers felt Severin, who had gotten in trouble for other remarks before, was on his last legs.

“We want to emphasize that WTKK still strongly supports an open and spirited debate about the many issues our community and our country currently face,” the station said. “There will no doubt be times when people disagree with what Jay says. Our goal is to maintain a level of discourse that is compelling and thought-provoking, yet civil and respectful. While we will not always succeed in walking this line, we will continually strive to do so.”

The station posted a similar statement on its website, concluding, “We hope you’ll experience what Jay has to say this Tuesday and every weekday from 3 to 7 p.m. Warm regards, WTKK Management.”

The station is owned by Greater Boston Radio Inc., which is a subsidiary of Greater Media Inc. Greater Media is the parent company of 23 AM and FM stations in the Boston, Charlotte, Detroit, New Jersey and Philadelphia markets, the station said.

Amazing how all conservative hosts or pundits are labeled “controversial.”

In a city and a state where Dems hold 98 per cent of political offices, conservatives are indeed “controversial”.
(and surprisingly at least Boston conservative talk hosts get ratings. The liberals have to _buy time_ to get their stuff on the air. And even THEY don’t listen to that stuff; some admitted libs on a Boston radio board complained about how
boring local liberal talk host Jeff Santos is.)

“women with mustaches and VD.”

Sorry pal, I never saw a mustache on Salma Hayek. Everyone knows Latina women are very traditional and remain chaste until their wedding night!/s;)

“WTKK still strongly supports an open and spirited debate about the many issues our community and our country currently face,”

Subject to review by our own private internal Thought Police, of course!

There, fixed it!/s

You missed Frieda, but you didn't miss much.

Sorry, that should be Frida, the biopic about painter Frida Kahlo.

We could all complain about the Thought Police, but if Jay thinks he's helping anybody or anything by going on like that, he really should have his head examined.

Too bad, because Severin's goal is to either shout someone down or simply hang up on them. He talks a good story, but when actually confronted with someone who disagrees with him, he acts a like a friggin baby. Personally, the first time he left (for syndication) I hoped he would stay gone.

Contrary to popular opinion, Severin is not a conservative.
