President Obama's "Back to School" Address (NOT mandatory in Georgia)
www.doe.k12.ga.us ^ | 9/3/09 | GA Dept of Education

Posted on 09/03/2009 3:38:10 PM PDT by Bulldawg Fan

At noon, on Tuesday, September 8, President Barack Obama will deliver a "back-to-school" address to students. The 15-20 minute speech will be broadcast via the web and on C-Span. You can learn more about this event at http://www.ed.gov/admins/lead/academic/bts.html. The White House and the U.S. Department of Education did not involve the Georgia Department of Education in the planning of this event. A letter inviting students to view the speech was sent directly to principals and local superintendents, not to the GaDOE. There is nothing in state or federal law that would require or prohibit a school from showing this speech to students and the decision lies completely with local school officials. Instructional time is a valuable commodity for schools. If a decision is made to show the video, it is important that its viewing and any subsequent discussion be tied directly to the standards being taught at the school. Also, it's important that students who do not want to watch the video have that option. If it is decided not to show the video to students, then please be aware that the speech can be viewed online after school hours at http://www.whitehouse.gov/mediaresources/. If parents have questions about the video, we would encourage them to contact their local school or school system.

I love it!

"The White House and the U.S. Department of Education did not involve the Georgia Department of Education in the planning of this event."

"Also, it's important that students who do not want to watch the video have that option."

This news release was the result of a Georgia State Senator, John Douglas, making an inquiry to the state education department and wanting to know if this was to be a mandatory event. His logic was the pledge of allegiance is not mandatory so why would this be?

Much to their credit, the DOE responded in kind and has issued this message that it is not mandatory and classroom time is valuable and needs to be used wisely.

Very well done Georgia!!! I hope other states will follow.

All over the land, irate calls to school superintendants is leading to cancellation of participation in the showing of this travesty. Every one with a child in school should be on the horn to their school principal tomorrow and blistering his ear until he gives. Failing that, keep 'em home.

So, is 0be going to go through a list of his initiatives that promote individual responsibility and initiative? If so, the speech shouldn’t take more than a minute.

Why should Hussein consult with anyone? It's all about him. He bypassed the states as well as the parents and went straight for the children. Very Hitler of him. Come on, Texas, let's see the same response from you!

I’m hoping South Carolina follows suit.

My school district sent me this email after I sent them comments of concern:

Thank you for your email. We have had hundreds of calls/emails on this and are trying to provide a solution that gives parents the option about what they want their child to see. The address is not part of the regular curriculum, so viewing the broadcast is not a planned activity on Sept. 8. RISD will show a tape of the speech in its entirety on Sept. 9 (outside regular academic activities) for students to view if they have parent permission (grades K-8). High school students will not need parental permission, but can act on the advice of their parents.

In a follow-up phone call, the district says the video will be replayed on during lunch on 9/9 for students wishing to see it. Ha! Like kids are going to miss their 30 minute lunch time to listen to the President tell them to stay in school. I call this a victory!

Oh, just saw on CBSNBCABCWHATEVER evening news that they’ve changed the wording of the questions. Uh, no they didn’t. The wording might have been changed after the “materials” had been sent out to schools so that doesn’t change what’s being presented to the children. Gotta appease the sheeple, ya know.

The missed part of the quotient here is, its is Obama’s base of support, union, NEA teachers who are having to ‘deal’ with the fall out of this. Not Obama or the WH or Rahmmy...nope the Union dupe who was all hopey and changey now has to be ‘nice’ to their students’ irate parents.

Karma. She is a biotch...

They worked in cahoots with input from the White House!!!! It was not mentioned WHO in the White House - but the WH had input into the 'lesson' plans.

My children’s school (charter) put out an email that explained that they were NOT going to participate. A lot of technical reasons, prior planning etc.

However, I thought it very interesting that they sited the fact that there is no Constitutional authority for the President to inject himself into a local school authority.

they sure are in cahoots...but its the teachers and administrative types on the front lines taking the calls, the meetings; having to answer the onslaught of emails.

I tried by Superintendent’s office today (spoke w/a secretary yesterday, who couldn’t answer my questions)...well, I never got thru (granted I was super busy at work) but I don’t think the phone lines were burning up with ‘please, please make sure my child gets his Obama Indoctrination on Tuesday...I don’t want him to NOT be brainwashed...’

I will try again tomorrow...I want to know exactly what will be done in our district.

The big deal is the Feds didnt tell GA that, it was a result of this state’s knowledge of the law.

What’s the big deal? He’s just recording a message and offering it to schools,

There is no way you are a conservative. If you were - and followed news closely - you’d be screaming from the rooftops about a President who wants children to serve him, and you’d be screaming louder when the text is revised and rewritten to appear innocuous because someone was ‘inartful’, to quote the White House, in choosing terminology.
