Sperm donor passed on sudden death heart defect
By LINDSEY TANNER, AP Medical 1 hr 36 mins ago
CHICAGO A sperm donor passed on a potentially deadly genetic heart condition to nine of his 24 children, including one who died at age 2 from heart failure, according to a medical journal report.
Two children, both now teenagers, have developed symptoms and are at risk for sudden cardiac death, the report says. It's the second documented instance of a genetic condition being inherited through sperm donation.
The latest case highlights the importance of thoroughly screening sperm donors, according to the report and an editorial published with it in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association.

“The latest case highlights the importance of thoroughly screening sperm donors”
How do you screen for a recessive? Or a combinatorial problem that requires an activating gene from the female?
Another lucrative revenue stream for lawyers in the working?
What a shame they weren’t screening for the black Muslim-Marxist gene when Stanley Anne Dunham was suffering from jungle fever back in 1960.
Wasn’t this an episode of House?
24 kids! I wonder what his donor profile looks like.
You don’t. This is a silly story that’s only making the news because scare stories about reproductive technology always do. The major sperm banks already provide a lot more genetic information on donors than most people would have for a man they’re marrying after knowing him for a decade. Eventually, when DNA testing becomes much cheaper and more efficient, and more genes have been identified, it will make sense to do full genome screens on donors, and it will also make sense for everyone to have a full genome screen done on themselves, even if they’re not planning to have children. But for now it doesn’t.
Probably very well educated, long-lived grandparents, parents with no significant health problems, himself with no health problems at the time of donation and none of the genetic problems tested for (CF, BRCA-1, BRCA-2, probably a couple of others).
If this man didn’t donate his sperm, these 24 individuals would not even exist (or there would be 24 completely different individuals in their place). Would they prefer non-existence to living with a chance of heart disease?
ROFLMAO!!!
Gattaca comes to mind.
Gattaca
Bush’s fault.
It’s OK. Dads pass on inheritable risks that they did not know about. People who wish to father children who don’t have healthy sperm use donor sperm and take on risks too. That is called life.
It’s sad but it’s the way it is. Sperm donors should not be held responsible unless they out and out lied.
I hope they sue for this. A billion dollars is too little for the loss of a child. There ought to be a law that if your child dies you get a billion dollars from the government. It doesn’t have to come from tax payers. They can just print it.
