First Case of Highly Resistant TB Seen in U.S.
Fox News ^ | 12-27-09 | AP

LANTANA, Florida — It started with a cough, a cool-season hack that refused to go away.

Then came the fevers. They bathed and chilled the skinny frame of Oswaldo Juarez, a 19-year-old Peruvian visiting to study English. His lungs clattered, his chest tightened and he ached with every gasp. During a wheezing fit at 4 a.m., Juarez felt a warm knot rise from his throat. He ran to the bathroom sink and spewed a mouthful of blood.

I'm dying, he told himself, "because when you cough blood, it's something really bad."

It was really bad, and not just for him.

Doctors say Juarez's incessant hack was a sign of what they have both dreaded and expected for years — this country's first case of a contagious, aggressive, especially drug-resistant form of tuberculosis. The Associated Press learned of his case, which until now has not been made public, as part of a six-month look at the soaring global challenge of drug resistance.

I’m sorry Mr. Juarez is so sick, but this story shows the weakness of American immigration policy.

Those seeking visas, particularly from 3rd world nations, should definitely be examined for serious illness.

I just got through reading this. This story actually started over 2 years ago and what I find alarming is it’s only news now. The story ends with the state of Florida spending half a million to cure this man. An man who was sick for weeks and maybe months before he finally went to the doctor. So Lord knows how many people this man may have infected. The doctor points out it’s an issue of national security to treat everyone and I agree- but it’s an issue of national security to prevent people like this from entering the country in the first place. The article states he came here to learn English so he may have been here on a student visa (as opposed to illegal), but anyone coming from countries that are known disease risks should be screened. It’s idiotic to screen an immigrant or refugee but not temporary visa holders.

From the article:

"About 60 million people visit the U.S. every year, and most are not screened for TB before arrival. Only refugees and those coming as immigrants are checked. The top category of multidrug-resistant patients in the United States — 82 percent of the cases identified in 2007 — was foreign-born patients, according to the CDC."

Well as soon as we get 0bamaCare passed and on the books, we won't have to worry anymore, right?

/do I really need a 'sarc' tag here?

“Then immigration and travel flourished, breaking down invisible walls that had contained TB.”
Voila!
However, screening those folks would be racist and a form of profiling. Can’t have it. Now shutup, get infected and go die. Quietly. Chop, chop.

“Those seeking visas, particularly from 3rd world nations, should definitely be examined for serious illness”

But that would stop the flow of democrat voters. Thus democrats would fight against it, and bribe senators with freshly printed borrowed money to vote against it.

We need to shut down all immigration until we get our house in order at all levels.

We are committing national suicide.

TB was vanquished from this country until Uncle Sam started letting all these foreigners in from Third World Countries, legal and illegal.

Why are we taking people from third world countries in the first place. They are never productive, deliver disease, and just provide fodder for the animals that live in the hood. We need a new Immigration Policy this is comprehensive and restrictive. No more Immigrants from Middle East, Africa and South America.

Immigration is hitting all layers of our society. We need to be even more restrictive than tightening up on third-world immigrants.

Until our unemployment drops to a non-catastrophic number, we shouldn’t be taking in foreign nationals to give them well paying high-tech and white-collar jobs.

I work in a high-tech industry. It sickens me that highly skilled and average-paid local, American workers are being laid off while the coffee rooms are swarmed with Indians and Asians who are not even US citizens.

Out and OUT LIE, there have been cases in CALIFORNIA of DRUG RESISTANT TB for the last 10 years, they just refuse to notify anyone. GOTO any hospital in New Tijuana (Los ANgeles) and you will See for yourself. The problem is they want the Illegals here at any COST, regardless of what happens.

Absolutely correct. Several years ago, there was a NYC emergency room nurse who acquired this disease and came to National Jewish in Denver for treatment. IIRC, she eventually had to have parts of her lungs removed.

This is what happens when this Country shut down Ellis Island.

This is what happens when this Country doesn’t demand a full medical report for anyone entering the USofA. Legally or not.

IF the Ghebbi Congress would DEMAND a medical on ALL incoming non US Citizens and on US Citizens returning from Countries which have not eradicated certain diseases, this would not have to happen.

I pray that anyone he infected will be able to fight the infection and live without scared lungs.
