Five years And $3 Billion Yields NO Embryonic Stem Cell Treatments

3 Billion wasted dollars. No cures. No treatments. California’s Prop. 71 initiative that pushed $3 billion in funding towards embryonic stem cell research five years ago has failed. The program promised to release cures and treatments held up by President Bush’s stupidity. There have been plenty of advancements including treatments to illness using adult stem cells. Even the Catholic church is a supporter of stem cell research, which many find completely unbelievable since they do not understand the difference between “stem cells” and “embryonic stem cells.”

Money which could have been better spent.

You are close to the truth but missed the mark. This is money that should not have been spent on anything. The government of ArnieVille is broke. They have been broke for some time. The only way to reverse this unfortunate postiion is to fire Government workers in California and cut back on benefits. It's either that or default on bond payments. There is no other solution. Raising taxes will just drive the affluent taxpayers out the state.

It is about grant money and fighting to keep abortion legal.

Such an observation might be valid if the goal was to produce results such as cures.

The goal was to devalue the human embryo to the point that it can be used, killed, and discarded without any compunction.

The goal is to remove all moral baggage from doing the same to embryos in the womb.

Bingo! I have always felt that this whole debate was about making abortion a "positive". Well, yes, it's terrible, but look at the good that has come of it.

Meanwhile, BO has cut "adult" stem cell research in his budget, increased the amount going to "embryonic". Reality be damned. It doesn't matter that no, NO, cures have resulted from embryonic reasearch; or, that adult stem cells are already being used to help people. No, we have to keep pushing the embryonic stem cell research.

Something this costly & time-consuming always struck me as why it's a better fed govt issue instead of a state one.

Plus, as far as embryonic stem cells are concerned, scientists have figured out a way to derive a whole stem cell line from just one embryonic cell.

The money did provide jobs for a lot of people so just look at the $3 bil. as a jobs program. Think of how many people it kept from turning to life of crime because of living in poverty and having their portfolios tank.

I just heard Rush remind his listeners about John Edward’s comment about how Christopher Reeve would have walked again if John Kerry (for stem cell)was elected president. He was wrong on two counts.

Even algore tacitly admits embryonic stem cell research is a dead end by investing his money in companies doing adult stem cell research.

50 years & $30B won’t achieve any results either.

But, they knew that going in, and didn’t care.

It’s the liberal way of excusing abortion, as though there may be some benefit to killing babies, so we must continue.

Sorry, but if the government is broke, then the money should have been spent on debt, not on nothing.

It was also Rush who argued five years ago that there was no evidence that embryonic stem cell research had ever cured anything, while adult stem cell research had a list of cures a mile long. I agree that the purpose behind the use of embryonic cells was an abortion issue and not a health care issue.

The SRM has INTENTIONALLY conflated “adult stem cell” and “embryonic stem cell” to support the leftist pro-abortion agenda and to attack “evil conservatives” as against curing disease.

Propaganda at its worst...

Exactly right. This was a no-brainer when it appeared on the ballot, and of course the people with no brains voted for it.

The private sector has been making tremendous stem cell advancements, all derived from adult cells. And as I understand it, those cells don’t have the down side effects that embryonic cells do. It’s a win/win.

The leftists come out on the wrong side of every issue.

Remember when brain-trust McCain disagreed with Bush about embryonic cells, because all those cells were derived by “legal means” (aborted fetuses)?

Leftists are a diseased bunch.

You don't understand. They don't have the money. They borrowed it. Why borrow money and use it to pay down the debt? They are broke. California is running something like a $20 billion a year deficit and waving their hands to cover it up. If you are Obama you just have the Fed print up another batch of "stimulus money". If you are Arnie you are stuck. Too bad.
