Intel Chief: US at Risk of Crippling Cyber Attack
FoxNews ^ | 2/3/10

The United States is at risk of a crippling cyber attack that could "wreak havoc" on the country because the "technological balance" makes it much easier to launch a cyber strike than defend against it, Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair said Tuesday.

Great. The last time an intel chief said something like that, the 9/11 attacks occurred. Here’s hoping nothing like that happens this time around.

A successful attach would not only disable the internet, it would disable power, gas, shipping (truck, train, air), banking and retail.

The entire economic and public safety infrastructure is largely dependent upon the internet.

The US should announce that such an attack would be viewed no differently than a nuke launch...as the eventual result would likely be similar, though slower.

Millions could die.

Seems like we’re at risk for a lot of things lately. So what is obama doing about it? Besides endless campaign speeches.

You don’t believe that Obama/Axelrod/Emanuel wouldn’t try to distract us by ‘wagging the dog’ would they? ;-)

Start by prohibiting the use of microsoft.

Use BSD Unix© which was paid for
thirty years ago by DARPA with
our tax dollars to prevent Cyber
attack from our enemies.

Nothing! He’s doing absolutely nothing. We’re just sitting ducks.

Ummm..., only after long hearings in the U.S. Congress that hardly anyone paid attention to (about terrorism) and also long after the first World Trade Tower bombing happened, and after the Oklahoma City bombing happened, and also long after countless Islamic terrorist attacks against the U.S. all around the world for decades...

I mean... how much "warning" are you talking about... LOL...

I dunno - cut off the CN and RU domains and clean up the botnets and an awful lot of your problems go away. Maybe a tactical strike on the RBN building just for grins.

Don't know if it's the gummint or a bunch of script kiddies with new computers but the Unix guys have been muttering under their breath about the Chinese hits for a couple of months now.

Oh, and hang a few spammers. Because we can.

Yep, the ISPs should beginning chopping off people's Internet connection the minute their computer is taken over and used in a botnet of some kind. And then to get back on their Internet connection again, the person who owns the PC has to prove that they've cleaned it up on their machine.

That's what needs to be done... :-)

Do I remember correct that back in the 1990’s the US government was going to establish its own network outside of the WWW? did they ever do such a thing.

Why don't we establish a US continental network that's inaccessible to foreign entities? Get our strategic network assets out of the hands of the Chinese, Russians, and ragheads.

Unfortunately Blair is right and it isn’t just a frontal attack. I heard a little piece back before Christmas that all of the digital picture frames had viruses embedded courtesy of the Chinese. Sounds harmless but put 1M+ of them out there and you can create havoc. We are screwed if a cyber attack really occurs. No ATMs, no online banking, no email communications.

That process was “in the works” long before Obama and would have continued no matter who was President. The “moves” to do that happened a long time ago. All that is going on now, are the continuing and incremental steps in that process.

Always have a little cash stashed back in case of just such an event. I keep a couple of Franklin notes tucked away in my wallet at all times.
