Would Legalizing Illegal Immigrants Help the GOP? (RINOs say amnesty opponents "not conservative")
US News & World Report ^ | 2010-03-19 | Paul Bedard

Posted on 03/18/2010 11:37:10 PM PDT by rabscuttle385

Republicans, who have been under fire in the Latino community for junking immigration reform in the Bush administration and promoting some policies that appear anti-immigrant, think they can win back Hispanics, in part because President Obama has largely ignored the issue. One way they see to do it is to legalize illegals.

"Conservative leaders see opportunity for the party," says a Republican immigration reform advocate. "Due to Obama's lack of action on his promise of immigration reform , we believe Latino voters are open to being wooed by Republicans," the conservative activist said.

The wooing began today at an immigration reform forum sponsored by the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles on Capitol Hill. Proponents say they want the plan to suggest that border security isn't enough to form an immigration bill . They also want to figure out how to deal with current illegals, perhaps through legalization or a guest worker program. But, says one involved, they don't support "amnesty, per se."

Since former President Bush was thwarted on his immigration plan, the GOP has dropped the issue. "Most Republicans are for immigration reform, but they are afraid of saying anything publicly because of the pressure they're getting from the anti-immigration lobby," says Alfonso Aguilar, senior fellow with the Latino Partnership.

"This is pretty weird, considering that the three main anti-immigration groups—FAIR, NumbersUSA, and CIS—are not conservative at all," he added. (FAIR is the Federation for American Immgration Reform; CIS is the Center for Immigration Studies.) "They advance ideas like zero population growth and global warming, which clearly go against basic conservative beliefs. Obama's total lack of leadership on this issue should serve as a call to action for conservatives. We should reclaim the immigration issue."

The forum came in advance of this weekend's planned immigration reform march, which is expected to bring 100,000 out to support reform.

The president only recently signaled that the issue will be on his post-healthcare agenda. Democrats think they have a better chance wooing Latino voters because they feel Republicans talk too much about the southern border wall and kicking illegals out of the country.

I distinctly remember a newbie attacking ALIPAC using the same allegations.

IMO, something's up.

I guess RINOs believe the argument is over:

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We’re a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change — some have
praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.”

Maybe Mexico would give an equal number of our citizens automatic Mexican citizenship with all rights of Mexican citizens? It would only be fair and the way things are going here, some may desire to go there. The question should be put to them as a test of good faith. If they say NO then are they racist? We should be allowed to vote in their elections, own property, get public assistance, if there is any.

Smart thinking on the RINO’s part. The 30 million “grateful” new “legals” will vote 70-30 for the democrats. You can’t buy that kind of genius.

Not a big fan of Mark Levin, but I once heard him say, “If you import poverty, you will only get more poverty.” Even if a massive influx of voters helps the GOP in some fashion (which is doubtful), there is no possible way millions of uneducated 2nd-world refugees seeking welfare could help this nation prosper.

I keep hearing that illegals are conservative. I've lived in Texas all my life and can assure you they aren't. I can also assure people that they aren't that Catholic. Most are drunk Sat night and don't go to church on Sunday. Many are gang members that still have blood on their clothes when they wake up Sunday afternoon.

For whatever reason, we are led to believe these are peace loving people that go to mass and keep their panties up all weekend. Not true. When they vote,.... and they do vote, they vote Dem for more bennies. I don't know any that would vote Repub. They don't even understand freedom and self reliance. They understand governments that give more and governments that give less.

Now that's ILLEGALS. I know many immigrant CITIZENS that understand the Founders principals. I have friends that spent years learning our history and language that are better citizens than most Dems I know. Yes, most of them are conservatives. They did it the right way.

It’s really tiresome to see the media repeatedly linking Republicans with Conservatives.

Republicans and Democrats see amnesty for illegal aliens as a possible way to garner more votes. Conservatives see amnesty as an encroachment on American citizens’ rights and a forgiveness for violating the sovereignty of the US. The majority of LEGAL hispanic immigrants and citizens are also opposed to amnesty for the illegals, according to many polls and articles that I have read.

I agree with all you stated, chuckles!

I’m a natural born Texan and have lived here for over 67 years (minus time in US Navy). The LEGAL hispanic residents truly resent the ILLEGAL aliens, because the latter group is connected with so much crime regarding drugs, break-ins, robberies and murders; all of which causes a tainting of the good hispanic folks that act as American citizens and have assimilated into the US culture.

A passing thought, from Yers Trooly?

backhoe Says:

Guys, just off the top of my head?

I keep reading “the Democrats know they’ll get whacked in November, so they’ll go out in a blaze of glory.”

And “They see this as the one great opportunity to pass everything they’ve been dreaming of, and can’t pass the chance up, regardless of consequences…”

But… bear with me- if they just get amnesty, 20-35 million illegal aliens become voters ( the figures vary, I can’t find the link quickly, but one non-kook writer I have read argues it is around 36 million– whatever, it’s a lot of new voters. ) who will be beholden to the people who gave them this windfall.

Plus, they will likely bring over one or two or three or more family members… even more new voters.

And with that, they might not be kicked out in November.

They might get and keep a permanent majority.

In an effort to regain the PA 8th Congresssional District seat he once held, Michael Fitzpatrick addressed a Bucks County Tea Party group Thursday night.

The subject of the illegal invasion/amnesty came up three times. It was the first subject brought up after Fitzpatrick asked for audience input.

Fitzpatrick held office during the hot years for the invasion awareness, 2004-2006, and was asked if he could give the crowd some insight into how that congress could be so disinterested in our border secrity. It must have been a difficult reuest. He did not seem able to process it. But he did say he voted for every secure border measure introduced to Congress during his tenure. Whether they were effective or not did not appear to be a concern.

He was also asked about his position on amnesty and he replied he was against blanket amnesty. Which means he supports one sort of amnesty or another.

He also publicly announced, specifically addressing a comment that employers should be prosecuted for hiring illegals, that he is opposed to taking any such action against employers.

Later in the night, Fitzpatrick again appeared stumped when an audience member called him on his earlier statement that he will always follow his heart when it comes to voting on an issue before Congress.

The Tea Partier reminded Fitzpatrick that his job wasn’t to vote what his heart told him but to vote in a manner that protects his constituents using the Constitution as his guide like his oath of office demanded.

Fitzpatrick looked confused by incomprehensible input.

He’s the Republican party’s favorite.

More change you can believe in.

Obama spent last week campaigning for health care reform, at one point getting some college-age fans worked up about all the free stuff — “free” preventive care and “free” checkups and so forth — they would receive if his version of health care reform passed.

TRI CARE FOR LIFE This from a google search:

http://economicspolitics.blogspot.com/2009/05/tricare-for-life-is-obama-trying-to.html

This option would help reduce the costs of TFL, as well as costs for Medicare, by introducing minimum out-of pocket requirements for beneficiaries. Under this option, TFL would not cover any of the first $525 of an enrollee’s cost-sharing liabilities for calendar year 2011 and would limit coverage to 50 percent of the next $4,725 in Medicare cost sharing that the beneficiary incurred. (Because all further cost sharing would be covered by TFL, enrollees could not pay more than $2,888 in cost sharing in that year.) http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/99xx/doc9925/12-18-HealthOptions.pdf

And here are toll-free numbers we can use to call any Senators or Reps.

At the first number below you must wait through a tape recording urging you to tell your Rep or Senator to vote “yes” for the health care bill. Just hang on and when the recording is over, you will get the Capitol operator. Just ask for your Rep or Senator’s office. Then you will either talk to an aid or have the chance to leave a message for him/her to vote NO on the health care bill.

When you use the second number and the Capitol operator comes on, just ask for your Rep or Senator’s office. Every time I use this number I get the Rep or Senator’s answer machine, so it may be set up that way all the time...to go to their answer machine. Either way you can leave a message to vote NO on the health care bill!
