Google Wants To Interrogate CNET Journalist To Find Out Who Ratted On Eric Schmidt*

What was that we were hearing a few days ago from Google about the importance of free speech, protection from tyranny, etc.?

We take it that this moral crusade doesn't include support for a free press.

"An attorney for Google and YouTube indicated today that the Web giants may call a prominent tech reporter to the witness stand in an effort to reveal who leaked the journalist confidential documents from the ongoing Viacom and Premier League copyright cases."

the enormously public stance and actions Google is taking right now to protest censorship and government control over the media in China, in contrast to which the desire to force a reporter to reveal sources seemed ironic.

Google is an illegal monopoly and should be broken up immediately. We are allowing a single organization to run the internet and censor the content thereon with impunity.

Those of you who do, go ahead and keep using Google.

The trouble is they are the best search engine by far. One simply has to realize they will filter according to their ideology. They do back off from time to time if called on it.

Exactly how is Google a monopoly? There are 100’s of other search engines on the internet. They are not Censoring the internet (The raw pages) but what they can do is change their database so certain pages are not found in their search. They have no public service responsibility they are for profit company, and they can and should evolve their product to how they deem it should be.

Now I’m no Google fan but that’s besides the point, they are a company, but they certainly are not a monopoly. We have choices, and just because some have deemed that those choices aren’t the best doesn’t make Google a monopoly.

Just my .02

the Chinese-owned Baidu is at par $$ wise vs Google. Bing is close but I agree, Google gets my search queries ‘close enough” to my original query.

Then again, they are a monopoly and needs compeition. I use scroogle on occassions to find terms which are anti-Google and for the privacy.

The only way they diminish is if someone finds a better solution. So far no one has. It is only near a monopoly because the others are so much weaker.

"Google is an illegal monopoly...

Though I don't like google statements to the fact that they are a monopoly are factually wrong and muddle the discourse.

There are many other search engines and its easy to use any of them if you wish.

If the EU gets their way and make Google cough up their “mysterious algorithm” for “monopoly’s” sake, then all bets are off. There was a story that the Chicoms were able to hack and steal that algorithm because one employee at Google left his pc on at Google HQ and they were able to extract it..

No matter how many times Google thumbs their nose at China, the Chinese govt are more petty and insidious than your run of the mill liberal Dem.

My sister works in Hong Kong for a multinational company so she knows how they operate. Google blew their chance and their childish behavior is just theater. In Chinese culture, Google’s antics are a sign of weakness. Check out Baidu (the Chinese Google) vs Google stock..it’s almost matched..that’s why Google are whining.

They have something or the price wouldn’t be so high. Google is outta luck. You can’t sue a Nuclear power that might call in the notes of the USA.

LOL so true. FYI, Google’s former CEO (Schmidt) is now working for obama as the tech czar, that’s why he’s leading the assault against China, and he’s still taking his marching order from Google due to his stock with his former co.
