“Frustrated by recent political setbacks, tea party leaders”

Hmmmmm, what set backs might that be? The Tea Party movement has not been around all that long. It looks to me that it is the dimoKKKRAT party that has had the setbacks.

"The Second Amendment deals directly with the right of an individual to keep and bear arms to protect themselves from an overreaching federal government."

Very close to a quote from Robert Bork in his book Slouching Toward Gomorra. (Page 166 in the paperback edition.)

State Sen. Randy Brogdon, R-Owasso, a Republican candidate for governor who has appealed for tea party support, said supporters of a state militia have talked to him, and that he believes the citizen unit would be authorized under the Second Amendment to the Constitution.

The founding fathers “were not referring to a turkey shoot or a quail hunt. They really weren’t even talking about us having the ability to protect ourselves against each other,” Brogdon said. “The Second Amendment deals directly with the right of an individual to keep and bear arms to protect themselves from an overreaching federal government.”

Another lawmaker, state Rep. Charles Key, R-Oklahoma City, said he believes there’s a good chance of introducing legislation for a state-authorized militia next year.

State militias clearly are constitutionally authorized, but have not been used in recent times, said Glenn Reynolds, a law professor at the University of Tennessee and an expert on the Second Amendment. "Whether someone should get a militia to go toe-to-toe with the federal government ... now, that strikes me as kind of silly," he said.

I wonder if King George III thought the same thing.

God, I love Randy Brogdon. I voted for him when he first was elected to State Senate, back when I lived in OK. I miss OK :-(

I think they are probably frustrated by the same thing we all are: a gargantuan entitlement program that benfits the few at the overwhelming expense of the many, that was forced upon Americans against their will literally in the dead of night through a record level of bribes, kickbacks, and backroom deals.

He's my guy for Governor, from what I hear of him and hear him speak, he is exactly what Oklahoma needs now. He wants to protect Okla. from all Federal intrusion.

I never liked Mary Fallin, I have always thought of her as an opportunist, and now she has married or going to marry a LIBERAL Democrat, she needs to go home and bake cookies. She sounds good at times, but I have no doubt that the LIBERAL hubby/friend will persuade her to become a RINO.

I am a native Texan and some of my ancestors were born in Texas during the Republic. But I lived in OK for 7 years. I would joint such a militia, with no hesitation.

If the State of Texas suggested the same, I would be there in a twinkle. Have no desire to “play military”, but Patriots do not play anything. This is serious business.

Hurray for OK for the initiative.

Looking at my copy right now...

Obviously written before the recent Heller decision...But I believe Bork would have sided with the majority decision in that case...

His subtext at the bottom of the page seems to ride the fence in my opinion, but this was before better arguments could be formulated to define the Amendment better, and for people like us to dive into the issue in a more originalist viewpoint...

It is an inheirant, unalienable right, one that has been based upon and granted by an authority higher than any government instituted amoungst men...

So thats all the authority I need, and no government will every be able to justify taking that right away from me...

I dunno about you guys, but I believe Oklahoma is heading in the right direction...

“State militias clearly are constitutionally authorized, but have not been used in recent times...”

Not true. South Carolina and a number of other states have organized state-sponsored militias separate from the Guard.

"The Second Amendment deals directly with the right of an individual to keep and bear arms to protect themselves from an overreaching federal government."

And the writer of the second amendment (Madison) further expounded on this application of the need to keep and bear arms in Federalist #46 for further proof.
