There’s that superior urban culture the left talks about.

Police were searching Saturday for a suspect accused of killing a homeless man who tried to stop an assault on a woman in Queens.

Authorities say Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax, 31, was stabbed several times in the chest last Sunday morning at 88th Road and 144th Street in Jamaica.

They say a man, seen above on surveillance video, was assaulting a woman when Tale-Yax tried to intervene.

The suspect then turned a knife on Tale-Yax, who died on the sidewalk as pedestrians walked by, apparently unaware or uncaring that he needed help.

The suspect is described as five-feet-six-inches, with a medium build and wearing a green short-sleeved shirt, a green hat and dark pants.

Police believe the woman was able to flee the scene when the attacker turned on Tale-Yax. She is described as five-feet-three-inches tall, thin, and wearing a three-fourth length jacket and a skirt.

Anyone with information on the case should contact the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS, or text CRIMES and then enter TIP577, or visit www.nypdcrimestoppers.com.

At the following link there is surveillance video of the attacker:

In my small city in NY, if I came across someone laying on the sidewalk, I would call 911 and see if I could help him. If he had been attacked I would be his protector until the police showed up.

BUT, we don't have people laying on our sidewalks. This would obviously be a situation that needed my attention.

Not so sure this would be the case in NYC. I have seen, for myself, a homeless guy sleeping on the sidewalk outside the Javits Center. I didn't call 911. I figured he was sleeping. He was, as he was later awakened by our groups presence.

I saw a bum laying on a bench just outside Central Park. He had blood on his head and there was a small pool of blood on the sidewalk below his head. Did I call 911? No. There were HUNDREDS of people on the sidewalks and I figured someone must have already called and I was just a tourist. After I walked away a police car and ambulance pulled up to that location.

Don't be so quick to condemn those NYers. It's a different world.

This kind of thing is less likely to happen in places where seeing people passed out in the street would be considered “out of the norm”.

1) This guy was laying in a pool of blood.

2) I've lived in New York City all my life and know first-hand how cowardly and unconcerned most people here are.

Really sickening. Makes NYers look as bad as people think we are.

PS, I hope they catch the perp and serve him a little bit of justice in a NYS jail cell.... that ought to hurt.

“Not until some 15 minutes after he was shaken by the pedestrian — more than an hour and 20 minutes after the victim collapsed — did firefighters finally arrive and discover that Tale-Yax, 31, had died.

Firefighters were responding to a 911 call of a non-life-threatening injury at 7:23 a.m. when they found his body.”

Wake for homeless hero
By LORENA MONGELLI

April 26, 2010

The homeless immigrant killed last week in Queens while rescuing a stranger from a knife attack will be mourned at a wake in Brooklyn Wednesday. ..."

At least 25 of his fellow New Yorkers walked past the Guatemala native as he lay dying, and no one thought to call 911 for nearly two hours.

The wake will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. at Funeraria La Fe, at 183 Wyckoff Ave.

Rest in peace. A true hero stepped in to help someone and all others just let him lie there. God forgive them.

Not to stir the pot here, but what would the FR reaction be if it turns out he was an illegal immigrant?

Be honest now...

A lot of illegals seem to be otherwise decent, hard-working, family-orientated people, at least here in NYC. They are very polite and respectful. I'd much rather have them as neighbors than many members of certain other groups, if of course they had done things the correct way and entered the country *legally*.

I don’t consider an angel’s presence illegal.

I am not defending what has happened but if you have ever been in NYC you will see homeless and drunks lying on the ground I heard this morning TV news program, a guy was saying the blood was not seen until they moved the subject. So its possible seeing a person just lying on the ground is no reason to call 911. The cops most likely would not have responded with just a call of someone lying on the sidewalk.

You will also see 10s of 1000s of selfish, uncaring, unobservant people doing little to assist other people in need, even in circumstances requiring a minimum of effort. You rarely even see people bothering so much as to inform a driver that his headlights are off. Dozens walk right past them at crosswalks without alerting the driver. Yet all it takes is a simple hand pointing directed at the car's lights.

The call takes a few moments. The cops can decide what they want to do but you at least made a reasonable effort to help. I also live in a large east coast urban area...I would not hesitate to call.
