Independence Day: Crist Likely to Drop GOP Label (Announcement Thursday)

Gov. Crist to make announcement on political future Thursday

Gov. Charlie Crist's fall from Republican Party grace will finally hit rock bottom on Thursday when he is expected to announce that he will run for the U.S. Senate as an independent, according to several news sources citing anonymous sources.

Crist had ducked the question for the past few weeks, but previously was on the record as saying he would never leave his beloved GOP. And by never, he meant as long as he thought he could beat Miami Republican candidate Marco Rubio, which seems like a long shot now.

Cruist has until Friday to officially pledge his allegeance to a party or no party at all. He has come out and said he hasn't made any decisions yet, but two supporters said Crist has been making phone calls to campaign contributors telling them they will be supporting an independent run starting Thursday. Crist's flip flop could not only mean doom for his political career unless he wins, but it could also spell disaster for the Republican Party, which has been begging Crist to drop out of the race. Recent polls have shown that a sure win for Rubio would turn into a three-horse dead heat if Crist went independent. Democrat candidate U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek has been gaining steam and is making the race even closer.

A press conference is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Crist's hometown of St. Petersburg, where he is expected to announce his intentions. Rubio and Meek have also scheduled press conferences to likely rip Crist no matter what he does.

In the fine tradition of Jeffords, Chaffee, and Specter, Gov. crisco shows his true colors.

That’s what the Democrats said about Lieberman. There are some RINOs in Florida who will vote for Crist.

Crist certainly has turned out to be this year’s Darlin’ Arlen.

"Crist had ducked the question for the past few weeks."

Bullshiite. He outright lied about it on Fox News Sunday.

He could peel off enough RAT votes to win. He’s an asshole, but he’s a pretty good campaigner and of course he’ll get more media than Rubio, unless there’s something negative to say about Rubio. It wouldn’t surprise me if he gets backdoor (no pun intended) help from the DNC.

If nothing else Crist is a political transvestite.

Crist will lose a lot of support after going independant— and continuing to attack only Rubio. Rubio should be getting ads ready to point out that Charlie would rather see a Dem than a conservative.....

This is a different animal than Joe Lieberman’s case. In that case, the GOP effective adopted him as their candidate, and had no serious rival candidate. It was just Lamont vs. Lieberman. This will be a true three-way race.

I wonder if he can garner union support. He just did them a major solid, vetoing the teacher bill.

He is not going to win — Republicans are very much united now for Rubio after Crist pulled this stunt. Most indy’s think he is a jerk.

People encouraging him to run are Dems who don’t like Meeks.

Rubio will win in the general over both of them — polls are already showing that in a three way race. Meeks and Crist are after the same group of voters.
