Illegal immigration continues to be a controversial and divisive matter, not only in the United States, but throughout the world. The illegal immigrant population of the United States in 2008 was estimated by the Center for Immigration Studies to be about 11 million people, with 560 000 of them residing in Arizona. Arizona Senate Bill 1070 (or simply SB 1070) signed by the governor of Arizona Jan Brewer on April 23, 2010 makes it a crime to violate some federal immigration statutes and authorizes local police to determine whether people are in the country legally. The act is scheduled to go into effect on July 28, 2010, ninety days after the end of the legislative session.
