More than 12 million are modern slaves, says U.S.

A sobering new report from the State Department finds that more than 12 million people worldwide are victims of "trafficking in persons" — trapped in forced labor, bonded labor or forced prostitution. But just 4,166 people were convicted of trafficking last year, the report says.

Even so, awareness of the reach of modern slavery has made such crimes easier to report and police, the study says. Ambassador-at-Large Luis CdeBaca, who heads the State Department's anti-slavery efforts, noted that 116 countries have adopted anti-trafficking laws since the United Nations enacted a law against modern slavery 10 years ago. Last year marked a high-water mark, both in identifying trafficking victims and in mounting successful prosecutions.

"Countries that once denied the existence of human trafficking now work to identify victims and help them overcome the trauma of modern slavery, as well as hold responsible those who enslave others," Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in a letter accompanying the report.

The report includes testimony from trafficking victims around the globe. One American survivor ran away from home when she was 11 and moved in with a man who sexually abused her and forced her into prostitution. When the police found her, she was charged with committing prostitution and no effort was made to find her pimp. Her lawyers are appealing the conviction, arguing that at 13, she was too young to consent legally to sex and thus could not be charged as a prostitute. The report notes that for every one person trapped in sex slavery, nine people are caught in forced or bonded labor.

How many Muslims are there in the world? How many are women?

That’s a heck of a lot more than 12 million.

I thought the story was about working people being taxed half their income in order to pay obama’s non-working recipients of wages of productive people.

Taxpayers are slaves to obama.

I am forced to give up a significant portion of my time and treasure paying taxes to a government taking actions I do no agree with. This government is led by a socialist who I do not believe legally holds the office, abides by the founding documents of my Country, nor respects my Country. I consider myself a slave, or a citizen of an occupied Country. We’ll see if elections are allowed to happen normally in November and in 2012... If not, it’s on.

I think a major problem in this World is the naivety of people. People cannot believe that people are the rottenest, most disgusting, conniving, cruel, mean, diabolical, animals on the face of the Earth.

People cannot get past association to realize the depth of inhumanity that is outside of their circles of interest. If one associates with only like kind, which most people do, then they don’t really know the others, and can’t cope with the evil that they represent even when it’s shoved in their faces.

The old cartoon gag of the Ostrich with its head in the sand is a truth not to be taken lightly.

There’s evil out there people. Our lousey government has allowed it onto the porch. Don’t let it in the door.

Many of the illegal immigrants are brought here essentially for slavery.

Our politicians are rather schizophrenic in this matter. On the one hand, as a member of the military, I have had to take a class on how to recognize human trafficking and what to do about it. OTOH, they turn their backs on illegal immigration which feeds the problem in the US and refuse to do anything about it.

Don’t let it in the door?

It’s streaming by the millions into our back yard already!

Probably 99.99% of them are in Muslim countries, the only flat-out, full-blown, unapologetic practitioners of chattel slavery still left in the modern world.

Democrats were the Party of Slavery in the nineteenth century and their support of illegal immigration from Mexico makes them the Party of Slavery in the twentyfirst.

Human traffickers take advantage of lax immigration laws. They do the same thing in Europe. The sex trafficking business exploded in Europe when the European Union went into full effect because it decreased border enforcement.

This is one of the problems that wont be solved until nations get a handle on their borders. It’s just like drug trafficking...we are fighting a losing battle because we refuse to confront the real source of the problem.

...12 million people worldwide are victims of "trafficking in persons" — trapped in forced labor, bonded labor or forced prostitution...no need to look "worldwide" - half the earners in this country are forced to fork over excessive amounts of what they've earned in the form of taxes to pay for benefits claimed by the other half, who pay nothing in taxes - slavery is not yet dead in the US.......

When you consider the fact that Congress is passing laws that are overwelmingly rejected by The People and then force us to pay for all of their spending programs, one could say that the entire population of the US is enslaved.
