San Francisco Considers Ban on Small Pet Sales
NBC Bay Area ^ | Thu, Jul 8, 2010 | JESSICA GREENE

Law would apply to sales of cats, dogs, hamsters, rats, birds

It could soon be illegal for pet stores in San Francisco to sell pets.

The San Francisco Animal Control and Welfare Commission will take up a proposal tonight that would ban the sale of all small animals from the City's pet shops. Only fish would be allowed to be sold under the ordinance, which is believed to be the first of it's kind in the country.

The proposed law is designed to encourage people to rescue animals from the shelter instead of buying from a pet store. Supporters say it would reduce overcrowding and euthanasia rates.

Animal shelters say they are overrun with perfectly adoptable dogs, cats, hamsters and rabbits. The law would also crack down on puppy mills, which sometimes supply pet stores.

"If puppy mills don't have a place to sell their puppies, then they wont be in business," Sally Stephens, with the San Francisco Animal Control Welfare Commission said.

But there is some concern that the animal sale ban would be bad for businesses. A small bird store owner told us the measure would put him out of business, even though shelters are not overrun with birds.

Lemmiwinks is relieved!

That was one of the funniest comedy bit I ever saw... /g

My suggestion to prospective San Francisco pet owners? For an ideal pet get a tapeworm. They go where you go, they eat what you eat, and they're very quiet...

Good.

Never could figure out the motivation for that anyway and I hate trying to dodge those ankle-biters and blue-hairs on the road.

He most likely wasn’t. 95% of animals in shelters are euthanized. Not condemning you but did you try to give kitty away? I have had a gazillion strays come to my yard and I have got on my local radio trading program and given them away, or found them homes with friends or relatives. We have 3 cats and 3 dogs, all of them strays, and they do cramp our style a bit. We have to hire a petsitter to stay at our house while we go on vacation, etc, but I love them and feel good knowing we saved them from almost certain death. And they bring us so much joy.

Gee thanks, now I really feel bad. Poor little guy.

We didn't really try to give him away but did ask around with the neighbors to see if anyone was missing a kitten - and if not, would they be interested in him.

It's sparsely populated out here so short of placing an ad and having strangers come around, the shelter was our best choice.

I try not to be too sentimental about animals but sometimes you have to make tough decisions that are no fault of your own.

As an aside, the shelter worker said they worked in conjunction with private animal rescue groups and that it was possible he would find a home. But who knows.
