Two new polls Monday showed Democrat Jerry Brown leading Republican Meg Whitman in the race for governor, but the modest point spread indicates it will likely remain a tight contest to the finish.
The Rasmussen and SurveyUSA polls were the first taken since celebrity Los Angeles attorney Gloria Allred revealed last week that Whitman had employed an illegal immigrant housekeeper for nine years -- a story that has dominated the campaign ever since.
The polls were released on a day when KGO-AM in San Francisco announced that a radio debate between Whitman and Brown scheduled for today had been canceled. Exactly why remains a bit of a mystery.
The Rasmussen poll of 750 likely voters showed 49 percent favored Brown, while 44 percent favored Whitman. In a similar survey two weeks ago, Rasmussen found the two candidates in a statistical dead heat -- Brown at 47 percent, Whitman at 46 percent

Why would anybody expect anything else from Californians?
Let him have it. I’d rather have the Titanic slip beneath the waves with a Democrat at the helm than a RINO.
1. There was bound to be some fallout to the hit piece maid b.s. story.
2. Likely voters? Dems have a very low motivation to turn out.
3. People know Jerry Brown. He’s maxed out his voters. I’d give Whitman the edge with undecideds.
4. It IS California. Republican having a legit shot at a win = great news.

If this is the Gloria Allred bounce then it is underwhelming. If it fades in the next few weeks then Meg has a good chance.

Having lived in California for 42 years I won’t be surprised to see Brown, Boxer and Global Warming win... Hope not, but just trying to be realistic.

Good. Seriously. It’s apparent that California needs to truly feel the effects of their misplaced sentimentialism. I might even vote for Brown myself, just to hasten the state’s fiscal demise. I live amongst some of the most selfish, childish, entitled voters anywhere.
I’m stuck here, too. There’s no way i’m leaving (family commitments). Which means I’ll just continue to be the bitter man on campus, who will eventually be proven correct, but long after there’s any way to do anything about it.
No prob, all my toys are dialed in and there’s plenty of food on the table.

I’m all for the Californian dems sinking in their own cesspool with Jerry Brown at the helm.
Besides, if Whitman wins, the newly in-charge Republicans in Congress might be more inclined to bail California out of its mess with our money. That won’t happen if Moonbeam is in charge.
However, I am for Boxer to be called ma’m for the rest of her life.

That’s ok, there are probably a few Kossacks canceling them out - just unable to vote for Moonbeam again. Maybe they are starting to feel the effects of the socialism.
So if you actually think that electing Whitman is going to save California's bacon then maybe you're the one who's not so brilliant.
Finally, I didn't say I actually wanted Brown to win but if he does let him take the hit for the inevitable collapse.
Again the (R)s put up a wuss. She is not anywhere a conservative sooo the "candy man" (Brown)wins again. This state will not change by the election of this race. This nation is not going to change by the outcome of this election. We may be center/right nation but the election fix WILL not allow it to happen. NOT make it happen.
I lived through both Moonbean’s terms... his dad was governor when my fami;ly moved to California.
California is over. The golden state is gone. Socialism has triumphed. Illinois too is like California; broke, eroding
middle class losing businesses the rise of poor minorities and firm one party rule.
The makers will relocate to different states or countries.
The takers of course will remain behind bleeding whatever is left in the corpse.
We are witnesses to the devolution of the U.S.A. This next election will show even greater political divisions among the states. It’s inevitable.
