Yep, RIP. Listened to the 1984 World Series on my radio in the garage. Was only 9 1/2 at the time.

Sparky and his Detroit Tigers were the reason I started to like baseball.

RIP Sparky, and God bless.

I’m a Cincinnati Reds fan and I remember when Sparky was the manager of the Big Red Machine.

When Sparky was the skipper of the Reds he had the nickname of “Captain Hook” because he went to his bullpen early and often. Now everyone baseball manages their pitching staff that way. Sparky was ahead of his time.

Thanks for the two Cincy world championships, Sparky. RIP.

It was only 3 years ago when Sparky and I were exchanging barbs while standing in line at the Thousand Oaks post office. I told him it was his duty to come out of retirement ;-)

RIP ol pal!

The 84 Tigers were an unstoppable force. They were a wonder to watch.

Did he, at one time, lead the SF Giants or the Oakland As?

Another fine old gentleman goes to join the Great Scorer — who, i’m sure, will have many wonderful things to “write against his name.”

My favorite Sparky quote is what he said after the Orioles beat the Reds in the World Series. Brooks Robinson had put on a stellar performance at the Hot Corner, prompting Sparky to say over breakfast one morning, “I have a feeling that if I knocked this plate off the table, Brooks would come out of nowhere, scoop it up, and throw me out at first.”

He was only 76? Cripes, I thought he was 76 in 1976. Must have been the white hair.

RIP. He was a great coach!
