Computer glitch hits Wells Fargo customers
The Birmingham News ^ | November 6, 2010 | Russell Hubbard

Wells Fargo & Co., Birmingham's third-largest bank by deposits, said today that computer problems this afternoon led to some account information not being displayed correctly on the Internet and on automated teller machines.

Bank of America and Chase were also affected. (?)

People were not able to get into their ATMs - not just in AL, but all over the country, from what I heard on the news tonight.

Anybody else have problems?

I had a problem this afternoon at the AM/PM when I went to gas up. I just figured it was AM/PM’s machines (as usual) and went to another gas station. I ranted for about 15 mins about how AM/PM SUCKS!!! I may have been wrong.

I can understand one bank having glitches - but three all at the same time?

Something doesn't smell right, here.

Customers were taped for the news, saying they couldn't get into their ATMs at any banks.

And, I don't think you are old fashioned - I don't ever do online banking or even buy anything online with my credit card.

Well I had problems( Wells Fargo). Won’t go into it but the ATM was weird, not telling me my balance, couldn’t transfer funds and then decided, time to check out, change my password and go in the bank for what I needed.

I have a couple of friends that also refuse to buy online with a credit card, yet they have no qualms about handing their credit card to the server when they bring the bill at a restaurant. It’s obvious which is more risky.

This may not be related at all. However, today, my e-mail account on att.net suddenly stopped accepting my password. When they gave me a new temporary one I immediately tried that and it did not work either. Not sure what is happening. Could be coincidence, maybe not.

Oh, so the $230K I keep in my Wells Fargo checking account that showed up as $23.00 was THEIR mistake. Whew!

I was wondering why my Wells Fargo account suddenly jumped $230k today. Thanks for answering that question for me. Now I understand.

BTW, thanks!

You know, I think it would be ok to buy one of those fireproof little portable safes at Wally World, and keep some cash at home.

If the banks are still having a ‘glitch’ on Monday, I’m going to start seriously wondering how come more than just one of the major banks are having ‘glitches’?

I tried to check my Chase credit card activity tonight, to no avail. At first I thought I forgot my password. To retrieve it, I had to type in my SS#. Yet the computer wouldn’t allow me to type in the correct number. It kept omitting the 3rd digit when I typed it...then would tell me that I gave an incorrect number. So, I called the number on the back of my card. A recorded message asked for the last 4 digits of my account. I gave it and a recorded message stated that they didn’t have access to the online system and to hang up and try later...or to dial zero to speak with an agent. I dialed zero and the agent told me the same thing...and that it is due to “maintenance”. He said that they do this every month. First time I’ve ever had this problem. Interesting in light of the post.

The Wells Fargo outage was (is) very real. I could only get to about $500 of my money today. Ironically, just this morning I was discussng with my wife that we needed to keep more cash on hand just in case. We went into a WF branch after seeing our debit cards declined at more than one location and the tellers were unable to do anythingv for anyone in the bank. People were coming in angry and they just turned them away. After I got home I did some searches on Twitter and saw many, many comments from people who could not get to their money at Wells Fargo or Bank of America. I can see one bank’s system going down with a ‘glitch’ or something, but two at the samed time? That’s improbable, to say the least. Although, one possible scenario is that the upcoming time change tonight hosed things for them. Unlikely, but it is a possible explanation for both megabanks to glitch out at the same time.

Uh oh.............

I certainly don’t want to be considered an ‘alarmist’ - but right now, I am wondering what is going on? BOA, WF, AND Chase? All three?

Does anybody else wonder? Aren’t they on different computer systems?

I logged on to a Wells Fargo account about an hour ago and transferred funds between two checking accounts. There didn’t seem to be any problem.

Of course, this would happen on a weekend - when the banks will be closed.

Hoping that Monday, everything will be back in order at (ahem) all the banks that suffered a mysterious 'glitch' this weekend.

I can understand that certain very old-fashioned people might not be comfortable with online banking, but no ATMs? Egads. That's like living your life as some kind of time-travel art project.
