(CBS) Robert Sargent Shriver Jr., or Sargent as he was better known, has died, CBS News confirmed Tuesday. Shriver had Alzheimer's disease.

Shriver was perhaps the most accomplished man never elected to public office.

His career in public service and civic leadership spanned the second half of the 20th century. A call from President Kennedy ignited that career.

In 1961, Mr. Kennedy asked Shriver to launch a project called the Peace Corps. It only took him six months to get the program up and running.

"They have to have an internal motivation, an internal conviction," Shriver said.

Born in Maryland in 1915, Shriver worked his way through Yale University and then Yale Law School. He enlisted in the Navy during World War II and fought in the Battle of Guadalcanal.

He married Eunice Kennedy - President Kennedy's sister - in 1953. The Shrivers settled in Chicago and had five children, including broadcaster Maria Shriver.

“I think his legacy is more important today than it has ever been,” Maria Shriver told Harry Smith on CBS’ “The Early Show” in 2004. “The programs he created from the Peace Corps, Head Start, Job Corps, VISTA, foster grandparents, Legal Services for the Poor, they are still affecting millions of people today.”

Democrats used to have something useful to contribute to society. But that was long ago.

When I hear the name I think it’s a military rank. I never heard Colonel as a first name, for example.

The Peace Corps was and is nothing but an indoctrination by the State Dept. for future progressive employees.

I think "Lieutenant" would be a good name.

20/20 had a report on Friday about the 1000 rapes involving female Peace Corps volunteers in the 50 years of its existence. Even more disgusting is the way they covered it up and gave little to no support to the victims.

It may be that his first name is from a grand parent’s last name. Rush Limbaugh’s first name is from one of grand parents, IIRC.

Working ones way through law school and fighting at Guadalcanal deserves respect. RIP Mr. Shriver.

"It may be that his first name is from a grand parent’s last name. Rush Limbaugh’s first name is from one of grand parents, IIRC."

His full name was Robert Sargent Shriver Jr. It looks like he used the initial R. in lieu of Robert and perhaps was called by his middle name, Sargent, in order to be differentiated from his father.

National Lampoon once did a kind of Beatles spoof of the Sgt Pepper album/lyric sheet called Sargent Shriver’s Bleeding Hearts Club Band

I did notice in ‘05 there was an FR thread saying Shriver had turned 90 and there was praise of him as a good guy and
pro-life etc
