Alexandria, VA. - Feminists for Life of America remembers the many contributions of Sargent Shriver who died in a Bethesda, Maryland, hospital on January 18, 2011, at 95 years old.

Robert Sargent Shriver, Jr., graduated from Yale in 1938 and Yale Law School in 1941. After Shriver married Eunice Kennedy in 1953, they settled in Chicago.

Shriver was a strong advocate for civil rights and integration, who persuaded then-candidate and U.S. senator "Jack" Kennedy to personally call the King family after Martin Luther King, Jr., was jailed in Georgia.

Shriver was appointed the first director of the Peace Corps by President Kennedy. After the assassination of the president, Jacqueline Kennedy asked Shriver to arrange the funeral, which was watched by millions around the world.

President Lyndon Johnson called on Shriver to lead the "War on Poverty." He created and directed the Office of Economic Opportunity, which administered programs like VISTA, Job Corps, Head Start, Legal Services, and the Community Action Program. From 1968 to 1970, he served as the United States' ambassador to France.

As the Democratic Vice Presidential nominee in 1972, Sargent Shriver was the last pro-life candidate to run on the Democratic ticket.

In 1984, Shriver was elected president of Special Olympics, founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 1968, and in 1990 he was appointed Chairman of the Board. President Bill Clinton awarded Shriver the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, in 1994.

FFL President Serrin M. Foster remembers meeting with Sargent and Eunice Kennedy Shriver when Feminists for Life opened the Washington, DC, office. "We were taking on too many things, especially for an office with one staff member. They encouraged us to focus on one thing and do it well, as they had done, serving people with intellectual disabilities through the Special Olympics."

Whatever one might think about Mr. Shriver's political views, it seems like his convictions were sincere. I give him a lot of credit for being openly supportive of pro-life causes even though in the last few decades there has been a lot of pressure on anyone who is liberal to support abortion. I think his life story is also a good example of how untrue the stereotypes about pro-lifers are. Any pro-choicer who stereotypes pro-lifers as uneducated or uncaring about born people should consider all that this gentleman accomplished!

I saw a short bio of his on TV.

It appears he was at, or near the heart of just about every taxpayer sucking failure on the part of the Federal Government during modern times.

If we started a Federal Government - Wall of Shame for social programs, he would sure as hell be within the first ten members inducted.....

For all of their ‘good motives’ and misplaced action, inductees will receive a little trophy featuring a Tin statue at the top showing a wallet with a few leaches bound to it. The leaches will have inscriptions engraved on their backs - “Compassion”, “Peace”, “Poverty”, “For The Children”....ect, ect.

Shriver sent dozens of naive kids to their deaths. Shriver and Kennedy didn’t consider a way to protect these kids. They sent kids to sh*tholes and some kids were slaughtered and butchered by savages in third world cr*pholes.

These kids needed Marine Corps protection. You know, the protection of not real peaceful guys armed with M-16s, M-60s and K-Bars.

I can list all the American Peace Corps volunteers killed by Shriver, but I won’t. Look it up.

Mr. Shriver was liberal to the core, the only redeemong quality he had was his pro life stance.

Reminds me of Lieberman, one issue he is right on (national defense) and everything else, hard core liberal.

Allow me to expand on Shriver’s Peace Corps. We had something similar in Nam called the Combined Action Platoon (CAP) or the combined Action platoon (CAP).

It was a Marine Corps operation that pacified and protected villagers. The Marines in these operations were armed to the teeth, unlike the Peace Corps people.

Anyway, Marine CACs were attacked and Marines died protecting the villagers.

Imagine these Peace Corps people with no weapons, no air support, no rescue. It was suicide and they never knew it.

Schriver needs to answer for that.
