A pirate fired a rocket-propelled grenade at a U.S. Navy destroyer shadowing a hijacked yacht with four Americans aboard Tuesday. Then gunfire erupted, the military said. U.S. special forces rushed to the yacht only to find the four Americans fatally wounded.
The experienced yacht enthusiasts from California and Washington are the first Americans killed by Somali pirates since the start of attacks off East Africa several years ago. One of the American couples on board had been sailing around the world since 2004 handing out Bibles.
Their deaths appeared to underscore an increasingly brutal and aggressive shift by pirates in their treatment of hostages.
Killing hostages "has now become part of our rules," said a pirate who identified himself as Muse Abdi and referred to last week's sentencing of a pirate to 33 years in prison for the 2009 attack on the U.S. cargo vessel the Maersk Alabama.

In the old days the naval commander in the vicinity would be allowed (and expected) to burn the pirate sheltering port down to the ground.

WE supposedly have the most advanced military in the world, with the best of resources, and are supposedly geared-up for war against terrorists -which pirates are. So why can we not seem to do anything about this? The surrounding nations don’t seem to care or are helpless to do anything. Why is this not a priority? Hello - is anyone home in the White House, or are you out playing golf again?

That’s the missing linkage. Any port that shelters pirates is either governed by a criminal regime that gives shelter to pirates or is governed by the pirates themselves.
Very bad idea. Keep them out of reach of the ACLU lawyers. Military commission on the deck of the USS >fill in the name of vessel here<, and then hang 'em from the yardarm. Best part, it's legal.

It has often occurred to me and still seems strangely counter-intuitive that we lost the will exactly when we developed the ultimate means.

They are holding more than 600 hostages and 30 ships? Hello!!!!??? That wouldn't be something so easy to hide.
IF the international community (or even just the US) wanted to do something about this, it could be done.
Failure to act is to be complicit.
