From rice to toothpaste, items floated to North

February 26, 2011

In addition to fliers, the South Korean military has been sending up necessities like medicine and clothes in giant balloons across the demilitarized zone into North Korea.

The military has been flying more than 10,000 material goods over the border since early this month, according to a Ministry of National Defense report given to National Assembly lawmaker Representative Song Young-sun on Thursday.

The goods in the airborne packages include instant rice, radios, toothpaste, toothbrushes, pens and erasers. The total cost of the operation is estimated to be 620 million won ($549,000).

The last time the South carried out such operations was April 2004.

The military has been very busy sending propaganda fliers with balloons, according to the report that was received by Song’s office. Around 3 million fliers have been sent across the border since December as a retaliatory move against the Cheonan sinking and the shelling of Yeonpyeong Island last year.

According to the report, the military said the baskets carrying the goods contain timers set to release the items above certain regions in North Korea.

The goods are labeled with instructions saying, “This is the military of the Republic of Korea. It is safe to eat. If suspicious, it can be eaten after [trying out samples] on livestock.”

Recent fliers flown to North Korea have included information on the recent revolts that have taken place in Egypt and Libya.

Song’s office said that the fliers connect the dictatorships of the Middle East countries with North Korean leader Kim Jong-il and his heir apparent, Kim Jong-un.

“How the news on the recent democratic protests in the Middle East gets into North Korea is important as to what will happen there, don’t you think?” said one military source.

Analysts believe that the government is coaxing change from inside North Korea. One government source said yesterday that a North Korean defector who had recently crossed over into the South said the escape had been compelled by one of the fliers sent from South Korea.

nice baloons. It doesn’t look like much imho. They need to blanket the sky to get the point across

These actions have the effect of keeping North Korea in its status quo. Unfortunately, the only way to win a war is to make it hell. The Soviet Union fell only after Reagan cut off the support the Democrats supplied.

I doubt they would risk livestock to test it on.

There is no better time to do this than NOW.

AND, when Gaddafi--or what is left of that tyrant--is in fact dramatically strung up in Green Revolution Square in Tripoli for the whole world to see on live TV (which I predict within three to four days), photos and DVD images of these MUST be spread throughout North Korean territory by propaganda balloon or underground overland smuggling with complete information of the people rising up in Libya and toppling a dicatorship of 41 years whom everyone feared. People Power can be contagious. THINK POSITIVE. AND ACT! One gets these windows of opportunity so rarely. The DPRK regime can and will be "tipped". They are incredibly vulnerable at this point IMHO, more so that I have seen in years.
