Obama: I believe in the 2nd Amendment
Hot Air ^ | March 4, 2011 | Ed Morrissey

CNS News has a pretty good moment here for Barack Obama from yesterdays’ presser with Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon, after a reporter from Mexico challenged Obama on why he doesn’t just “veto” the 2nd Amendment. Obama patiently explains that American Presidents have to work within the Constitution and don’t have the power to veto its provisions, and then explains that the 2nd Amendment isn’t the problem in gunrunning between here and Mexico. We can and should curtail that through enforcement of existing law, Obama says, rather than infringing on the “legitimate” uses of firearms by American citizens:

“The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution allows American citizens to carry weapons and this principle is defended,” the Mexican reporter said. “However, President Calderón has said that this law in Congress–this could actually go against U.S. agents, and this has happened. So, President Obama, in Mexico we have the veto, the power of veto. I don’t know how far you have the ability to veto that law that has been approved. And if you have that responsibility, why don’t you do so, sir? How long are we going to allow Mexicans to be murdered–and not just Mexicans, but now Americans, as well?”

Obama responded: “Well, the Second Amendment in this country is part of our Constitution, and the president of the United States is bound by our Constitution. So I believe in the Second Amendment. It does provide for Americans the right to bear arms for their protection, for their safety, for hunting, for a wide range of uses. That does not mean that we cannot constrain gun-runners from shipping guns into Mexico. And so we believe that we can shape an enforcement strategy that slows the flow of guns into Mexico, while at the same time preserving our...”

Yup. He also stated ‘I believe in healthcare for everyone” before Obamacare happened.

It seems almost mean and petty not to give President Obama credit when he does get something right, but I wish he’d gone a little farther and explicitly pointed out that the fact that the office holder here is under the Constitution is the great contrast with our rule of law and Mexico.

Anybody else see in Obama’s statement the crux of BATFE’s efforts to transport guns to Mexico - I believe on his orders?

The target was the heart of the 2nd Amendment!

It seems to be an emerging pattern.

He comes out in defense of his actions before he even does it.

Just shows he KNOWS he’s wrong, and on the wrong side the people’s will.

Ya, like this wasn’t a typical Obama prearranged question.

Why doesn’t Mexico keep guns from flowing in from Central America and people from flowing out into the US? Seems like they’re too stupid and inept to do either.

Already has. He is acting as president.

“Well, the Second Amendment in this country is part of our Constitution, and the president of the United States is bound by our Constitution."

Hey Barry, how about enforcing the Rule of Law with ILLEGAL immigrants?

It tells something about the sad state of Mexico when Barry, from all people, has to explain that a constitution is a bit more than window dressing.

So I believe in the Second Amendment. It does provide for Americans the right to bear arms for their protection, for their safety, for hunting, for a wide range of uses.

Maybe I am being petty, but I do not believe that the Second Amendment was set up for these purposes. I believe that the Second Amendment was set up by the founders a yet another check and balance that the people could use against the government. I am sure that this is well over Barack Obama's head.

It’s Obama-speak. He believes in it only in that he accepts that it exists and he’s forced into accepting it as President as it is one of the biggies. He doesn’t agree with it.

That does not mean that we cannot constrain gun-runners from shipping guns into Mexico.

0blahblah is right and his statement is actually one of the strongest on the 2nd Amendment of any recent President. That said he needs to apply that constraint on the BATFE if he wants to slow the gun-running to Mexico.
