Red Wine Fights Radiation Better than Iodine
Standard News ^ | 15 Mar 2011 | Rayna Tosheva

Have red wine instead of iodine solutions to curb the effects of radiation. This is the advice of Bulgarian scholars as a response to the panic stirred after the explosions in the Japanese nuclear plant of Fukushima. Although the explosions in Japan happened at quite a distance from Bulgaria, thousands of Bulgarians stormed into drug stores to buy iodine supplements. This is dangerous as it could damage the thyroid gland, the Bulgarian Ministry of Health alarmed. Red wine consumption is by far a more potent barrier to radiation because of its high tannin concentration, Prof Donka Baykova, deputy chair of the Bulgarian Nutrition Association told the Standart. Red wine is a strong antioxidant and protects against foreign agents, the professor explained. Research carried out by British scientists, evidences that Bulgarian wines are especially beneficial in such cases, according to Prof Baykova. People in Vratsa, northwestern Bulgaria, are masters in banishing the radiation effects by means of red-wine-drinking and consumption of chili peppers. The recipe has been brought from Russian and Ukrainian natives who came to the town after the accident in Chernobyl, 1986.

“This is dangerous as it could damage the thyroid gland”

Not likely. Iodine is a necessary nutrient. A large share of the population are deficient in it.

But people who have Hyperthyroidism could be negatively affected by it.

The reason Potassium Iodine is used is to combat radioactive iodine.

Radioactive iodine will only affect one organ of the body -- the thyroid gland (which is a center of control of metabolism).

That is because the thyroid is the only organ that has tissues with iodine pumpers.

The Potassium Iodine displaces the radioactive iodine -- that is how it works.

Since what has been initially released (that I am aware of) is radioactive iodine and celsium, the potassium iodine will protect the body from the radioactive iodine.

Did you say “Just in case” or “Just a case”?? Cuz, you know, a case really might not be enough if the exposure goes on too long... Better safe than sorry.

Gotcha beat...glass in hand.

To think all these years I've staved off the effects of radioactive contamination by drinking wine ... damn I'm good. All this time I thought I was doing it for my heart.

Heck of a lot easier to find in large quantities right now than iodine tablets, and what the heck can you do with iodine tablets when this all turns out to be a media-generated scare? I know what I can do with a s-load of wine!!

Thank You VERY much Froggy. My wife has been driving me nuts trying to get me to eat these terrible tasting "seaweed" concoctions to "clean the radiation" from my body. ASSuming of course that I have radiation in my body.
This latest Japan catastrophe has seen her intensify her efforts.....gag gag puke!

I just emailed her the article and link.
