U.S. Drone Strike in Yemen Reportedly Was Aimed at Radical Cleric Seen as Post-Bin Laden Threat

Published May 06, 2011 | The Wall Street Journal

A U.S. drone strike in Yemen on Thursday was aimed at killing Anwar al-Awlaki, the American-born radical cleric who is suspected of orchestrating terrorist attacks on the U.S, but the missile missed its target, Yemeni and U.S. officials told the Wall Street Journal.

The drone strike comes less than a week after U.S. Navy SEALs killed Usama bin Laden at a compound in Pakistan. Had the drone strike in Yemen been successful, the U.S. would have killed two of the top three most-wanted terrorists in a single week.

That's been reported on for years. First under Booosh.

Although, I'm quite pleased that the Obama murder-a-thon continues, raining death and not water (boards) on the heads of our enemies.

I'm also greatly amused that the sane and humane brigades of Obama worshipers are starting to realize that Mr Peace Prize is a extra-judicial murder-machine wielding thug who has no use for the courts or civilian justice. He can't mistreat prisoners because he takes none.

I happen to agree with Obama on this, but for different reasons. He's killing them out of expediency. He's just too lazy to come up with a way to square his values with his actions, so he's taking the easy way out. So is, indirectly, every soft headed liberal who supports him. Slowly, every so slowly, that fact is starting to register with them.

Wait till they serve Awlaki the JDAM de jour, and his supporters realize that Obama killed a U.S. citizen without so much as a trial.

I understand this same facility is used as a baby milk factory when Republicans are President.

Yesterday, an empty Downs Syndrome school was blown up in Libya.

I think 0bummer will step up these attacks (Yemen being the first example), and Special Ops raids, as a means of beefing up his creds in the run up to Nov. 2012 to offset his dismal failures on the domestic front.

Actually, the way is preplanned. Eric Holder has the plan in his top desk drawer. He’ll pull it out and play hell with the loathed perpetrators when the time comes

He’s in for a rude surprise, then. I know a lot of those drone operators. ;-)

There is a sarcastic way to praise Obama over all these killings, I mean, REALLY lay it on hard and thick, and spread it all over liberal sites. Praise him as a merciless killer willing to go outside US law, and see how that sits in the stomachs of the International A.N.S.W.E.R, MoveOn.org, Michael Moore, Quakers, ACLU, and Code Pink crowd. Let them then stew in their own liberal juices as they realize the Monster they (in their mindset and political frame of reference) have created on their own hands. The Japanese call this political tactic (over praising one of one's enemies in order to destroy his core base he needs for election or relection as "homegoroshi" 誉め殺し. They did it against former Japanese Prime Minister Noboru Takeshita. Rush Limbaugh would be excellent at this. The White House would freak out. Start up the Marine Corps recruiting drives on college campuses to follow the president into "obliterating the enemy, gunning him down at ever chance, launching UAV drone strikes into populated areas just to get terrorists", the whole sarcastic, ironic nine yards. Make Obama out to be a Stone Cold Murderer with no heart, put it on T shirts and then see how it sits with the liberals who would neve countenance this under Bush and Cheney. Use their logic, tactic and momentum right against them, then point out their hypocracy. Make them feel uncomfortable about the whole thing, and then drive wedges. Get a Bernie Sanders or John Dean or Dennis Kucinich to run against him in the primaries. Spread it around Europe within the bowels of official Nobel Peace Prize-ism.

Today, US forces missed in an attempted follow-up strike against an al-Qa'ida leader. Given events of the last five day, it could not have been otherwise.

BHO took little delay in announcing the killing of OBL and flaunting the apparent treasure of computer intel from his abode.

Moments prior to BHO's first announcement, the early word was OBL had been killed the week prior. That one week delay made perfect tactical sense.

It's called "getting inside the timing of the enemy's decision loop". It is a widely used practice in highly competitive business environments and is a cornerstone of military tactics. In other words; kill OBL, gather on site intel, exploit the intel, and take further action - all before the enemy knows those events have occured.

Obama gave away a unique once-in-the-war event which should have allowed an immediate decisive crippling of al-Qa'ida. Instead, much of the tactical advantage of OBL's death has been lost. The prey has flushed and moved to new cover. All because an indecisive Barack Hussein Obama needed to literally cry out for immediate attention and credit for the death of Osama bin Laden.

I suppose the real question is, "How many other contenders for Caliph does Barry think there might be to his claiming the title uncontested?"

“The reported attempt to kill Mr Awlaki is believed to be the first known US military strike within Yemen since May 2010, when missiles mistakenly killed one of Mr Saleh’s envoys.”

Yemen? When did we start launching drones in Yemen? Well, Yemen is where Osama bin Laden's family hails from originally. Some accounts say OBL was born there.

we've been using drones there at least as early as this, which is about the time amnesty International and others started to whine about it:

NOVEMBER 3 2002 Sun : (EASTERN YEMEN : CIA DRONE NAILS SOME INTERESTING TERRORISTS, INCLUDING AHMAD HIJAZI aka ALI QAEDA SUNIAN AL HARITHI aka ABU ALI {See OCT 2000 USS COLE BOMBING} -- See BUFFALOCELL/LACKAWANNA6) ----------Yemeni killed in CIA strike tied to alleged N.Y. cell USA Today / AP ^ | 11/9/2002 | Staff, http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2002-11-09-yemeni-buffalo_x.htm

Exactly and well said. He is too busy making a trophy out of OBL and boosting his own ego that he forgot to stop campaigning and act like the CIC.

How incredibly irresponsible.

Seems like a great idea, except I find it hard to describe as sarcasm. If it were a single vein of ironic truth, then yeah. But, the core of Obama is that he is a statist tyrant. His on-going lethal attacks by predator drone inside the borders of the non-battlefield nations of Pakistan, Yemen, and Libya have killed hundreds if not thousands and are fairly well documented. Obama is a merciless killer acting outside US and international law.

Not to mention, all the publicity of precisely which units were involved (and their home base) in the raid will doubtless subject those men and their families to untold grief/mental anguish stateside as slacker-sleepers get the assignments to track such families for a Beslan-style follow-up revenge attack.

Aw heck, he’s just warming up for 2013 to 2017 for “domestic terrorism” within our own borders (conservatives/patriots) after he is returned to office by a mass of unthinking sheeple and millions of illegal aliens also voting, Black Panthers voting 2 and 3 times, etc.

It is ever so odd that I was just considering things in a similar light. 0bama is cold-hearted. Senator 0bama in 2007 said he would go after Pakistan and the terrorist it harbored. Consider that for a bit in light of recent events.

0bama is getting bolder though and in some regards that is concerning.

As to his liberal left base? Odd, I just finished last night a debate online and the jist of whole matter was...

“It’s all about hating Obama? That’s the Republican strategy? What about The Bush’s obsession with Iraq? Was that all legal? Get over it. President Obama used one of his prerogatives as elected President of the United States of America. So what were we supposed to do? Let Bin Laden live on in hog heaven? Bring him to Gitmo? Don’t waste your energy worrying about it,” said the liberal.

I would caution that in the liberal mind...the ‘bad dude,’ isn’t subject to all the rights and privileges that a victim is. They are more apt to approve of the use of expediency for the sake of the collective, rather than to secure the rights of the individual.

It is what makes them so dangerous. The more that mentality takes hold, the easier it becomes for them to ‘group people’ into deserving and undeserving.
