In a decisive victory, former Nevada Republican Chairman Mark Amodei today won the party’s nomination for the Sept. 13 special election for U.S. Sen. Dean Heller’s old congressional seat.

In only one round of balloting, Amodei swept 221 of the 323 votes cast by members of the state GOP central committee, beating two other nominees, state Sen. Greg Brower and retired U.S. Navy Commander Kirk Lippold.

Amodei officially resigned as chairman of the party late last month.

"I will do my level best to make your decision here today look like a smart one," Amodei said, moments after the election.

Amodei easily won the GOP nomination, but whether the election will pit one Republican against one Democrat or will see a free-for-all among the 28 candidates who have already filed to run remains in the hands of the Nevada Supreme Court.

Despite the potential for a ballot royale, Republican party loyalists at today's central committee meeting hoped their vote would throw the party's support behind one Republican.

Indeed, Brower promised he would drop from the race following the committee's vote.

"As I said, it's important that everybody support the nominee," he said shortly after the vote. "It's important the party gets behind one candidate."

Despite a flurry of campaigning among central committee members following the close of the legislative session, Brower won just 56 votes. Lippold took 46. Lippold said he will continue to campaign for the seat.

Amodei denied he had any special advantage from his tenure as party chairman.

"I don't think this vote is a reflection of that," he said. "I don't take these people for granted."

Nevada = NV, not NM!

I was there this morning, still undecided when I arrived, but Lippold did a good job of convincing me is the LEAST desirable candidate of the three.

Not only does he support turning Nevada into a wasteland, he openly refused to abide by the established rule, he intends to continue running despite coming dead last in todays vote.

If the court throws out the clear Nevada process in favor of a free-for-all, and he splits the vote, he may hand the race to Dingy Harry’s lackey.

Nevada and the U.S. cannot afford another Dim in congress, Mr Lippold should show some of the character he continually claims and bow out immeiately!

My husband was there today as well. He said exactly the same thing about Commander Lippold. Even if he takes only 10% of the vote it could be more than enough to swing the election to Marshall.

The GOP will screw this special election up like it did all of the others.

Re: Lippold

I don't know much about the man other than having heard him being interviewed by Alan Stock on KXNT not too long ago. He said some good things, but I thought he came off as being arrogant, obnoxious, and somewhat combative. I suspect that he does not work well with others and expects to be in control. I am not surprised to hear that he will continue to run even if doing so splits the vote and hands the seat to the Democrats.

This is no surprise, everyone knew he’d get it. He wasn’t my first choice.

“expects to be in control”.

This is the vibe I get from him, too long in command, he expects everyone to salute and make way for him.

He thinks he is entitled due to his service, other candidates also served, he is not unique in that.

It will be interesting to see if he can learn a little humility before the election, I dread what the court may do to us, but hope for the best.

That seems to be a NY state phenomenon.

The possibly of a rat victory for this one was reduced with Sharron Angle deciding not to run.
