If you like volcanos, see ‘ On Volcanos of the World’, 4 part series.
Discovery or NatGeo,or Smithonian. (don’t recall which one )

Fantastic photography. This volcano included along with about 6 others.

...where it promptly blew up, killing several and badly injuring many more.

Is that the incident that killed that husband-wife volcano
photographers as well?

About 25 years ago, I did the Rotorua tour, and the they warned us
to stay on the path, "as six months ago, a US geologist that
should have known better, got too close to a mud pit, partially
slipped into it, and is still recovering."

Could have been a scare story, but with a legitimate purpose, though...

I saw one "Dirty Jobs" epi, and the host, Mike, was being a
lava "checker" in Hawaii.

He was maneuvering to stick about a 1m long probe into a rivulet of
fairly fresh lava, and his overseer said "..and try to keep the probe
moving, or you'll never get it out, and they cost $XXX..."

The text under the video provides a useful clue:

Yepper, just call me Captain Oblivious. In my defense, I need the text size large so that bit was still below my view. Still it does show that I may need to reduce my Top Gear addiction for now.

An interview that explains some of why they study the lava:

I believe that couple were a French husband and wife team, and they died in Japan. I think it was the pyroclastic flow that killed them. IOW’s, the superheated air that cascaded down the mountain, not the lava.
