They refuse to get their kids vaccinated, they are suspicious of fluoridated water and their kids are more likely to be inflicted with ringworm than the average American.
Trailer park rednecks? Nope. America’s bobo elites. Scratch a liberal suburbanite and you’re likely to find the modern equivalent of an Appalachian clay chewer underneath.
This week Fox 25 interviewed Natalie Norton of the Boston YMCA about “the recent resurgence of measles and whooping cough.” Yesterday CBS reported a whooping cough outbreak on Long Island, in the environs of the Hamptons. And on Tuesday the University of California at Berkeley alerted all students, faculty and staff to receive “an additional dose of the measles, mumps, rubella vaccine” due to an outbreak of the mumps.
Not the Tennessee Institute of Over-The-Road Trucking, but elite, liberal Berkeley.
These aren’t oddball anecdotes. The Associated Press reports that the anti-vaccine movement is on the rise, particularly in left-leaning states like Washington, Oregon, Michigan and Vermont. In crunchy-granola Ashland, Ore., health officials are intervening with public education efforts because the rate of immunization has dropped so low.
Then this from Fox News:
“Parents fearful of vaccinations are being warned by a federal prosecutor that making a deal with a stranger who promises to mail them lollipops licked by children with chickenpox isn’t just a bad idea, it’s against the law.”
Think about that — letting your kid lick a stranger’s lollipop because you’re “fearful of vaccinations?”
I thought this level of redneckery went out with the dousing rod. Instead it’s being embraced by Wellesley helicopter moms who don’t want their little snowflakes to get the needle.
Megan McArdle at The Atlantic notes that one elite school in the San Francisco area has an immunization rate below 25 percent.

Taken to it’s logical conclusion, this is naught but a self-correcting problem..........
There are many parents across the political spectrum who do not allow their children to be vaccinated according to government dictates. The recent “swine flu” scare is a good example of why everyone should be suspicious of public health experts.
Vaccines don't always make a person 100% immune to a disease, they provide enough immunity so that a disease does not have enough hosts to provide critical mass to spread to epidemic proportions or to mutate into a more virulent form that the vaccine cannot address.
The people who are resisting vaccines are creating a risk for the rest of society by producing a pool of host with little or no immunity that will allow a serious infectious disease to mutate into a more virulent strain and infect everyone, even those who have been vaccinated.
We have been so successful at eradicating some of these once devastating diseases that people have no experience with a full blown epidemic of a serious or deadly disease.
It is what it is.
I must be a lefty then because I too see real issues with vaccines (in pets and dogs) and with flouridated water.
There is a huge difference between any flu vaccine and vaccines given for chicken pox, measels, mumps, polio, and whooping cough. To try and make a comparison is silly nonsense

I beg to differ. The vaccination of CHILDREN UNDER SIX is not limited to the diseases you mentioned but also include: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, meningococcal (meningococcal meningitis), pneumococcal (pneumococcal pneumonia), rotavirus, haemophilus influenzae type b and influenza (flu).
I think parents should have the right to choose how and for what their children are vaccinated. They are different methods of vaccination as well. I am totally opposed to a “one size fits all” mentality in health care and that is what is being pushed on parents today. I don’t blame parents for opting out of such a system when they can’t even raise questions without being branded as abusive.
