NBC/WSJ poll: Romney Struggles With Primary Voters, Gingrich With General Electorate

By Mark Murray, Deputy Political Director, NBC News

WASHINGTON - Exactly three weeks until the first Republican presidential nominating contest in Iowa, front-runners Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney have two different challenges, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

Romney faces a challenge with the Republican primary electorate, trailing Gingrich nationally by 17 percentage points as nearly two-thirds of Republicans view him as either liberal or moderate.

Gingrich, meanwhile, faces a challenge with the general electorate, as half of all voters say they wouldn’t vote for him in November, and as he trails President Barack Obama by more than 10 percentage points in a hypothetical contest -- compared with Romney’s two-point deficit versus the Democratic incumbent.

“Romney has not caught on [with Republican voters],” says Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart, who conducted this survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff. “And Gingrich is so deeply flawed.”

“I think the Republican Party for the next four months is on the razor’s edge,” Hart adds. “Here is a year where they have a superlative opportunity to capture the White House. The question is whether they will self-destruct.”

This is troubling. That half of all voters won't vote for Gingrich in November and he trails Obama by 10-points.

When they are seen side by side in a debate, that deficit will go away before the credits run.

Reagan trailed Carter until September before the election.

Newt remains the brightest and the best of the candidates we have t pick from. Once Republicans pick a candidate to run against zero everyone will unite and it will be a whole different world. Too much at stake this time.

If Gingrich wants to win, he needs to hit the gym, eat a high-energy, high-protein, low carb diet, and look more “virile” next to Bambi.

Remember, Reagan’s gym pic that was on the cover of Parade Magazine? The age and energy issue disappeared after that issue.

Mitt Romney wins much coveted Jimmy Carter endorsement

Truthful Milt Romney:

"I'm very clear I think, to the people across the Commonwealth
my "R" didn't stand so much for Republican as it does for reform.

You could be right about Newt getting in shape - but the bigger question is ‘How does Obama grow a brain?’

Don't mean shit. Gingrich was in single digits among republicans, until the debates. Not that many rats and indies watching the parade so far. Wait until the Main Event. Newt will take care of business.

Right now Obama has the whole democrat party supporting him while Newt is still in the primaries without a vote even cast yet.

I don´t know. I think there´s something comforting about just having somebody who looks normal.

Bambi looks like a skinny freak and doesn´t look ¨virile¨ at all. Also, you always see pictures of Obama literally cramming food into his mouth; he has the table manners of a very hungry dog. He´s creepy.

Take a look at the Gingrich-related comments here on what is probably the premier conservative website, and see if more then 50% favor Gingrich.

Well, I bet half of them wouldn´t vote for Romney, either. That would be my half...

I not only don't remember "Reagan's gym pic on Parade Magazine," this is the first time I ever heard of it. And I was fully involved, as an adult, in 1980. Get real. How come we have people pimping for Christie, who outweighs Newt by a hundred pounds?

You amateurs really just raise the noise level and thats all.

Agreed. When Newt appears at the debate, he will be seen as a pudgy old white guy completely lacking in the charm Reagan (or even the Bushes) had. We need someone who can sway the independent sheeple, not by abandoning principle, but by persuasion.

Newt has taken the lead by telling conservatives what they want to here. That won't help him in the general election.
