Sarkozy gains ground on Socialist rival in latest poll

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has cut his Socialist rival's lead to the smallest margin so far in the run up to an April and May presidential election, a poll showed Sunday.

However, the poll showed that Socialist candidate Francois Hollande would still comfortably beat Sarkozy in a run-off.

The president has been capitalizing on his central role in Europe's struggle to contain its debt crisis, and gained ground even after announcing plans for an unpopular sales tax hike and after Hollande's campaign took a more aggressive tone.

In the first round of the two-stage vote, on April 22, Hollande would win 28 percent of the vote while Sarkozy would secure 26 percent, the poll by IFOP for weekly newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche found.

Hollande had a 10-point first-round lead shortly after the Socialist Party chose him as their candidate in October.

In the run-off, the poll showed Hollande winning with 54 percent of the vote while Sarkozy would get 46 percent, also the smallest margin registered so far in the election race and down from 20 percentage points in October.

As I reported earlier in the election cycle, Sarko was bound to rebound.
Hollande is an inexperienced politician, and an elitist Socialist technocrat who is uncomfortable around regular people.
Not surprisingly, as I predicted, Marine le Pen has faded to the point if being inconsequential in the first round. Her neo-fascist Statist message is getting boring, and with Europe in severe economic & social strife, dragging France down, she has absolutely no experience, knowledge ir depth to bring to the table.
France is basically a center right country and is looking to Sarko for leadership drawn from his entire life in public service, as Minister of Finance, Minister of the Interior, and President.
The surprise has been François Bayrou, a traditional Centrist who has a following. He is personable, a good campaigner, but lacks experience.
But still, you can’t beat something with nothing.

It sounds like Sarkozy will be staying for a while, doesn’t it?

It seems that the 6-foot b*tch from Africa really drove a stake into the heart of French Socialist Party. Henri-Levi must be crying somewhere. :-)

This film does more to destroy capitalism than build it. I felt like I was watching a Occupy Wall Street production.

It is a stretch putting this all on Romney’s back. I know companies that have had to close their doors and lay off folks to survive. Our company was one of those and I don’t like the picture that Newt is painting.

This video is not the miracle pill to turn voters to Newt.

This did not make my morning.

I think you posted on the wrong thread.
This is a thread about the upcoming FRENCH election.

The current right wing President was considered dead, and the Socialist Party candidate François Hollande, a shoe-in.
The latest polls show this is still very much an open contest

SARKOZY 26%
HOLLANDE 28%

This is good news indeed.

In short words; Europe needs a Conservative France.
