Paula Deen accused of condoning sexual harassment, racist remarks
The Chicago Tribune ^ | March 5, 2012 | Richard Fausset

Reporting from Atlanta— A former employee of a restaurant co-owned by Paula Deen has filed a lawsuit against the matronly celebrity cook, accusing her of condoning an atmosphere of sexual harassment and racism in her high-profile culinary empire. The suit also accuses Deen of casually referring to black people with a racial epithet.

The civil complaint, which was filed Monday in state court in Savannah, Ga., was brought by Lisa T. Jackson, a former manager at Uncle Bubba's Oyster House, one of five restaurants in Deen's group. The Savannah-based oyster house is co-owned by Deen and her brother, Earl W. “Bubba” Hiers.

Much of the 33-page complaint details what it says was boorish and racist behavior by Hiers, including accusations that he physically intimidated employees, displayed pornography at work, acted toward Jackson in a sexually degrading manner — including forcibly kissing her cheek and spitting on her — and repeatedly using racial epithets.

Further digging seems to indicate that the disgruntled former employee tried to extort money from Ms. Deen in return for her silence. No, this doesn't stink at all...

The day after my family joined me in Texas, we ate a a local Jims restaurant. The waitress came up to us and in her biggest smile said, “Can I get you some coffee, sugar?”

My wife almost had a stroke. “That’s discrimination, that’s not right, that is offensive.” (we are from the Northeast) I had to explain to her it is called southern hospitality and she should only worry when someone says to her, “well bless your heart.”

Paula was a good success story, and enjoyable in the beginning, but I think that money and fame has turned her head.

My wife being an excellent cook was a big fan so I paid over $100 for a ticket so she could see Deen who was appearing in Atlanta. Deen came out on stage and said "Thanks for coming", and left...leaving the cooking demo to the "hired help" who know one ever heard of.

Then later when I heard she was crazy about Jimmy Carter, and supported the obamas, we abandoned her altogether.

Well bless (his/her/your/their) heart.

The true southern insult.

Years ago my wife and I dined at Paula Deen’s first restaurant, Mother And Sons. I can only say based on the brief meeting we had with her, Paula was extremely nice and friendly and it was some of the best fried chicken I'd have ever had.

You can’t criticize Mother Michelle or be friendly to Sarah Palin:

Why?

“Can I get you some coffee, sugar?”

...how could anyone confuse that with discrimination?! I think it’s refreshing to hear a lady call me “sugar”. the NE mentality is destroying this country.

“Why?”

In the south, “Bless your heart” = “Up yours.” In a sweet way, y’know. I love the language of the south and am finally getting the hang of it after two years in TN.

Your wife really got ticked off by that? Really?

I’m not trying to cause a stir...just very curious. Is she a liberal?

I thought I was a “liberal” until my late twenties, but, even then, I don’t think that would have bugged me.

Oh, and btw, I held a deep seated conviction (due to brainwashing in public school/univ) that the South was backwards, racist and evil.

10 years ago I FINALLY got a chance to go to the SOUTH. I LOVED THE HOSPITALITY. Never saw anything like that before. If a nice lady called me or my husband or kids “Sugar”....made me feel special and cared for.

So...help a reformed Dem/lib out...what bugged your wife?

I never knew the “bless yer heart” thingy, until recently.

Oh, how I love it...used in the appropriate way against a dumb-arsed lefty.

It’s a southern way of POLITELY telling someone to go pound sand. It’s especially amusing when said by a old southern lady.

Yeah, it’s not like Paula Deen ever made any sexual remarks on her television show (including about her son’s private parts or her husband’s ‘sausage’).

This is an example of being hoisted on ones' petard.

I say “Bless your/his/her heart” all the time, and don’t mean it in a nasty way. Depends on the context of the conversation.
