Got controversy? No smooth sailing for U.S.S. Harvey Milk idea
SFGate: City Insider ^ | 5/14/12 | Rachel Gordon, Chronicle Staff Writer

San Francisco wouldn’t be San Francisco if not for robust political debate, even over a seemingly feel-good request to the U.S. Secretary of the Navy to name a ship after gay civil rights leader Harvey Milk, the assassinated city supervisor who served as a Navy officer during the Korean War.

Critics of the idea, led by Supervisor Christina Olague and a contingent from the San Francisco gay Democrat club named in Milk’s honor, don’t think he would have wanted his name associated with a military ship.

Milk was “against the Vietnam War and war in general,” Olague said of Milk, who was gunned down at City Hall in 1978 by disgruntled former colleague Dan White.

A more fitting tribute would be to get a national holiday named in Milk’s honor,

When are they going to adopt “In the Navy” as their official song?

I don’t think even Harvey Milk would support this idea. Say whatever else you will about Milk, he knew which (winnable) fights to pick, politically. This isn’t one. At best, proponents would “win” and create a lot of unnecessary bad feelings.

In the Navy, yes, you can sail the seven seas.
In the Navy, yes, you can put your mind at ease.
In the Navy, come on now people, make a stand.
In the Navy, can’t you see we need a hand.
In the Navy, come on, protect the motherland.
In the Navy, come on and join your fellow, man.
In the Navy, come on, people, and make a stand.
In the Navy, in the Navy.
They want you! They want you! They want you as a new recruit!

It’ll be the only naval vessel painted in pastels....and the “Chief’s Mess,” won’t be what it used to be.

Captain Ned: Thank you, Mr. Spunk. Gentlemen, we have on board a young man whose name is Miles Cowperthwaite! And I have promised his guardian to teach him the man's life at sea! To show him man's ports, such as Key West and San Fransisco! I expect him to be treated manfully! Well, Miles, have you anything to say?

Miles Cowperthwaite: [ stsnds, cheerful ] Well.. I'm very grateful for this opportunity, Captain Ned! Up 'til now, my life has been the most degrading, pathetic, soul-destroying, humiliating, awful grovel..

Captain Ned: [ interrupting ] That's enough, Miles.. [ Miles sits ] Now, men, I run a mans' ship. I will run it in a manful and masculine way! I will tolerate no men under my command who act in such a way so as to discredit their manhood and manliness! Do I make myself clear?

Miles V/O: "Having had no seafaring experience, I was surprised at how different the life of a sailor was from what I had imagined. Our day began at dawn, where, after a hearty breakfast, we had punishment 'til lunchtime. After lunch, there was more punishment 'til dinner. After dinner, we would pull up anchor and sail for an hour, then drop anchor again for someverbal humiliation, followed by evening punishment. I imagine that the crew is quite used to it, for in all my rounds with the ship surgeon, Dr. Pierce, I never once heard a man complain."

Better that at least than the USS Sean Penn, which should never happen ...

If everyone's really against bullying, they should oppose this, because the sailors on the USS Harvey Mudd would be teased mercilessly ...

... though maybe it's intended as a "Boy Named Sue" kind of toughening thing ...
