Gov. Scott Walker: Mitt Romney should tweak message

Gov. Scott Walker urged Mitt Romney to develop a more cogent economic message Thursday in order to win over the fickle swing voters needed to carry Wisconsin and win the presidency.

The Republican governor’s advice was more a critique of style than substance, but he warned Romney that framing the fall election solely as a referendum on President Barack Obama would be a risky bet.

“He’s got plans … But I think it’s got to be, narrow it down to a very simple set of messages that embody the larger plan that he has,” Walker said of Romney’s fiscal and economic policy proposals at a morning breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor. “I think it’s one where people have to walk away saying, ‘It’s not just a referendum on President Obama’, it’s also got to be … ‘I believe that candidate Romney’s got a plan that I can believe in.’”

I agree with Walker. It's easy to be critical of Obama, but swing voters will want a positive message. They aren't going to decide based on hate for Obama or love of Romney.

Walker is absolutely right. Romney needs to work his own economic plan into the campaign’s messaging. Being “not Obama” isn’t going to be enough.

Walker should stick to State Problems. Romney will work on Federal Problems. The two are not the same. But for Walker in any way to criticize Romney is wrong. He could swing his state away from Romney.

Obama will be out there with a set of give-away proposals that will be superficially attractive to the masses, and will need to be blunted by proposals of Romney's own.

In an article from USA Today, which cannot be posted, Walker said:
"If Gov. Romney thinks he can win this race just because he has an 'R' by his name and I have an 'R' by my name and voters see that as just about being Republican, that's not enough to win," Walker said. "The way he wins is that voters see that 'R' not as being Republican but as being reformer, that here's a candidate who has a clear, bold plan to get us out of the economic crisis our country is in."
