The leaders of St. Paul and Minneapolis say the proposed voter photo-ID amendment will be an unfunded mandate for cities.

Mayors Chris Coleman and R.T. Rybak, both Democrats, will meet at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 20, to explain their view that the measure would cost cities.

Minnesotans will vote this fall on whether the state constitution should be amended to require voters to present valid photo identification in order to cast ballots, starting in 2013.

The Republican-led Legislature last session approved putting the constitutional measure to voters.

Funny how dems don't mind spending money to try to recall sitting GOP governors.

And...it need not cost a lot. This reminds me of leftist arguments against capital punishment.("it cost more to execute than for life in prison")

Running proper elections is one of the few legitimate functions of local government. The taxpayers already fund it.

How can an election be proper and legitimate when the people will vote for the “wrong” person?

Why, of course the voter ID law would cost the cities — you'd eliminate all the dead and multiple Donkey voters from the rolls. The Donkeys in the cities couldn't use VOTE FRAUD anymore. What a shame. Boo hoo.

What I want to see is prosecutions and hard prison time for people committing vote fraud. I take voting seriously and anyone who commits fraud should be nailed HARD for their crime. This is especially true for any politicians or organizations (like ACORN or the SEIU) that are involved. If you take these pampered creeps out of their comfortable, taxpayer funded offices and put them in a cell with Bubba, the serial killer, I guarantee a major change in attitude about vote fraud.

yet they(MPLS) can afford $600k for unneeded decorative streetlights and St.Paul can spend a million on a cultural diversity center.

Wonder if it would cost more or less than free condoms and needles?

I agree on prosecution of persons doing vote fraud.

I told my state senator that I really would like to see prosecution of any election official found with any ballots in their trunk after all were turned in, there is NO reason for all polling places not to have turned everything it. Is there a check list listing machines and absente ballots or NOT!

Oh and that since those supposed ‘votes’ were not properly tracked they could not be counted. as for the scream of ‘disenchanting those ‘voters’? The only one who would have disenchanted the legitimate voters would have been the neglectful election judge. To me this really does need to be in our state constitution.

BTW the State of MN already lets people with disabilities get photo ID’s for 50 cents. I’m sure that many of those without ID’s are disabled and would fall under this rule. Heck if the 50 cents is a problem I have NO problem with it being completely FREE. (though if one can afford to pay 5 bucks or more for cigs one should be able to pay 50 cents for a ID LOL)
