Complete title:

Soldier has baby on the frontline: Doctors sent from the UK as Army girl - who didn't even know she was pregnant - gives birth after Taliban raid

###

Royal Artillery gunner who was deployed with the 12th Mechanised Brigade gives birth to baby five weeks premature

Fijian soldier had passed her pre-deployment training, including an eight-mile march and five-mile run, without realising she was pregnant

British Army handbook editor says top brass will need to 'start thinking very, very carefully' about how female soldiers are tested before deployment

*snip*

The woman had a son in Camp Bastion on Tuesday – just days after the Taliban launched a deadly attack on the UK’s main base in Helmand.

The baby was born five weeks premature. Last night both mother and child were said to be doing well.

A paediatric team from the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford will travel to Afghanistan in the next few days to provide care for the soldier and her son on their RAF flight home.

The birth has stunned military chiefs and led to calls for extra medical checks on women who are sent to the warzone.

Almost 200 troops have discovered they were pregnant at war since 2003 – forcing commanders to send them straight back to Britain. But this is the first time a UK soldier has given birth to a baby in Afghanistan.

*snip*

She had been deployed with the 12th Mechanised Brigade since March, but two days ago complained of severe stomach pains.

To her astonishment, medics informed her that she was about to give birth.

She was in the 34th week of her pregnancy, meaning she conceived before flying to Afghanistan for her six-month tour of duty.

Call me skeptical, over 7 months pregnant and didn't know it?

Maybe in denial and wishing she wasn't?

Who knows?

Maybe Fiji needs to step up their human physiology unit in biology class.

I know .. but it apparently does happen. I sure can see how the extreme stress of the battlefield would affect or even interrupt the hormonal cycles .. stress’ll do that as will other issues. Do women really belong on the frontlines ??

That'll take a nice little chunk outta their Defence budget.

Wonder who's much-more-deserving ox gets gored for that bit of PC nonsense ?!

Maybe they do a lottery . . tough luck chap, this is your day to get screwed !

That is really is odd. My niece is in the Air Force, and was going to be shipped to Afghanistan, the Air Force does pregnancy tests before women are sent (ten days before), so they never ship pregnant women. To her surprise and the delight of her and her husband, she was pregnant and didn’t have to go, babe is due on Christmas Day.
Yes, she is put back on the rotation, but not until the babe is at lease six months old.

(Shaking head.)

It's not unusual to hear about women giving birth who didn't realize they were pregnant --- though this is the first time I've heard on an unaware-pregnant soldier in a combat zone, yeesh.

I've never understood this. You gain 12 - 15 pounds in blood volume/ fluids/ placenta/ uterus elargement alone ---- that's not even counting the baby ---- and you don't notice? You don't have a period for 9 months, and you don't notice? Really?? That's what I'd call being "asleep at the wheel."

I'm post-menopausal now, but from ages 12 to 52, I was always aware of where I was in my cycle. I didn't do NFP-style charting, but starting at 12 I always kept a record at least of first day of the cycle.

I just can't even grasp the mentality of a woman who doesn't know what's going on in her body.

Plus, women and soldiering don't mix. OK, I said it. I'm not a gender-Victorian, but I really believe in "Vive le difference"....

Yes, apparently it does happen. I've read and seen TV segments about this in the past and having seen a few woman who claimed this that were obese I can understand, maybe. When it comes to women in the military the overwhelming majority are in very fit shape to good shape and this woman was nearly 8 months along. The wife and I have discussed this at times when these stories have come out, she was an LVN in the Army when we married but that makes neither of us experts. :)

Do women really belong on the frontlines ??

JMHO...Absolutely NOT.

Good for her! Guess the UK military hasn’t been doing thorough pre-deployment checks, which does sound weird. Then again, it could all be the gal’s coverup for a pregnancy that occurred there.

My first thought was that the Brits had cut back their Army so much that they were relegated to sending pregnant women into combat because they had too few men serving after the latest round of cuts. And probably in response to feminazis who demand that women can serve anywhere, anytime, no matter what.

News Item: While manning her machine gun, Pvt Cindy Jones broke the back of a Taliban attack yet had time between bursts to self-deliver a 8.8lb baby daughter, wrap it in a spare camo cloth and resume firing the machine gun for another 3 hours of the assualt.
