In foiled Jordanian terror plot, officials see hand of resurgent al-Qaeda in Iraq

AMMAN, Jordan — The plan was to unleash mayhem across an entire city and “bring Amman to its knees,” in the words of one security official. It would start with suicide bombings at two shopping malls, then build momentum as teams of terrorists blew up cars and raked cafes with machine-gun fire.

In the midst of the chaos that would ensue, the attackers would turn their attention to the U.S. Embassy, the primary target and a long-sought prize for the organization that investigators say provided critical support for the scheme: al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Iraq. Using the terrorist group’s expertise and weapons from Syria’s civil war, the plotters planned to rain mortar shells on the American compound and homes nearby.

“They wanted to kill as many as possible — Muslim and Christians,” said a Jordanian government official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing probe into the most serious terrorist plot uncovered here in nearly a decade.

Jordanian authorities foiled the plot last month, arresting 11 men said to be the ringleaders. Although the suspects are Jordanians, the investigation has affirmed the key role played by al-Qaeda’s Iraqi branch, commonly known as AQI, which analysts say is rebounding after being all but destroyed by U.S. troops in the past decade.

How's that pre-mature removal of AQI-suppressing US Special Ops from Iraq working out Barry?

US Special Ops in Iraq were regularly hitting both Al Qaeda and Iranian Al Quds operatives hard. Now Al Qaeda in Iraq is destabilizing semi-secular, semi-nationalist Maliki, hoping to end up on top in Syria and now trying to take down Jordan as well.

Iranian Al Quds is freer to assist Assad in Syria and continue to support Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza and the West Bank.

If Saddam Hussein was still around, we would not need US Special Ops in Iraq to suppress al-Qaeda.

Truthfully, I think our Special Operations types ought to create their own Muslim movement, specializing in counter-terrorism operations.

The idea is to both cover real counter-terrorism ops with the appearance that they have been carried out by Muslims opposed to al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups; and to form a decentralized anti-al-Qaeda organization that could very well attract Muslims to the idea of fighting al-Qaeda.

In the first case, the idea that Muslims would, or could, or would want to carry out highly effective counter-terrorism operations would be a shock to many Muslims, used to being cowed by terrorist violence, extremism, and the Muslim inability to do anything right.

Next, as a decentralized organization, any Muslim who wanted to, could in effect join by carrying out attacks against not just al-Qaeda, but the Imam-instigators that encourage other Muslims to carry out terrorist acts.

This takes the fight beyond actual combatants, to the real backers of terrorism.

Much of it would be Psyops, but it would open another front against both terrorists and terrorist instigators.

IMO it Saddam was still around he, the Iranians, and Qaddafi Duck would all have nukes by now!

Saddam was proved to have “retained capacity” to restart his program (blueprints and Iraqi scientists) and the craven French and Russians were angling to get UN/US sanctions lifted to enable them to spread their inferior hardware development costs with sale to Iraq funded by oil.
If Bush hadn't gone in the sanctions would have expired without further UN action, IIRC.

Meanwhile, it is clear that Qaddafi gave up his nuke program only after he saw what Bush did to Saddam and Iran suspended their program for the same reason.

Now that feckless weakling appeaser Barry is in the White House the Iranians are going full speed ahead.

The King of Jordan is America’s only reliable ally in the mid-east, other than Israel. Watch Obama pull the rug out from under King Abdullah sometime soon to complete handing all the area to radical killer Islamists. The ones we let get leadership in Iraq & Afghanistan are ready to cave to the terrorists right after our troops board planes for home.
