Fully agree. Overreaching on this may be the one thing that prevents the Congress from going all-Dem in 2014.

It was about 20 years ago now, so that a lot of younger FReepers won't recall it, but black liberal journalist and columnist and talking-head show regular Carl Rowan was involved in a shooting in his back yard. He shot a would-be burglar or prowler in the ass with a borrowed pistol.
The triple-bind was, a) Rowan was a big grabber and noisy about gun control, b) his house was in D.C., where you basically can't own a pistol, or if you do you can barely clean it without breaking their laws, pre-Heller vs. DC, and c) the gun wasn't even his, but was licensed to a relative who shouldn't have lent it to Rowan.
Guess we were supposed to understand the distinction that applies to journalists and Real Big People.
Rowan shot a kid in the ass that was trespassing and using his pool. The gun was supplied by his son that was an FBI agent.
They had to have a concrete reason to take a public position on our ownership of private firearms. What could it be? What's it to them? Are they telling us a) Barky's going to bust a move on behalf of International Communism to drag us all into camp, or b) Do the Chinese have longer-term plans to come see us? Like, with 250,000,000 "settlers"?
