Assemblyman Marc Levine announced today he will revive a proposal banning all single-use plastic bags in California grocery stores.
Under the proposal, most grocery retailers could no longer provide thin plastic bags for customers starting in 2015. For 18 months, retailers could offer paper bags made of recycled materials or reusable plastic bags for customers to bag their milk, eggs and other groceries.
Starting in July 2016, grocery retailers could only provide reusable plastic bags, which many stores already offer at a fee. The new proposal, Assembly Bill 158, also leaves room for stores to provide recycled paper bags at a charge.

Can I make an observation? The reason we have plastic bags in the first place is because of liberal enviro-extremism. Years ago, grocery stores and other retailers used paper bags.
But, liberal enviro-extremists wanted to save trees and save the rainforests, so retailers were pressured to switch to plastic to save trees.
The same liberal enviro-extremists who are now so alarmed at plastic bags are the ones who foisted plastic bags on us in the first place!!
So now, are we allowed to ask why these enviro-nazis made such an error years ago in pressuring for the use of plastic instead of paper?
Were they wrong then or are they wrong now? Why do we have to listen to the lunatic fringe of the environmental movement in making laws anyway???
Just make the plastic bag handles a little bigger so that the seals can handle them better when the bags drift out to sea. It isn’t like the seals don’t have things to carry around.

I use a reusable type bag when I go shopping at Aldi’s (since they don’t carry any bags of their own). HOWEVER, I only use it for things like canned goods, dry package stuff like crackers and so on. When it comes to things like meat, seafood, and even some produce, whatever I use is one-and-done. Not worth the risk of later cross-contamination, IMHO.
those plastic bags used today are so thin and cheap....there can't be much waste there...
notice that the govt elite don't go after the real culprits of waste....like the guys that package cd's...or the way anything from china is packed....all plastic crap you have to cut a knife thru to open, plus all that styrofoam...
maybe if we stopped buying so much crap from far away, and bought stuff made here, we wouldn't need the excess packaging..

Exactly, studies have already shown a high risk of bacteria contamination from the use of the “re usable” plastic bags because people don’t think about or take the time to wash them. I believe that this is just pushing dollars into the hands of manufacturers making wildly overpriced goods from recycled plastic. Have you noticed the outrageous price of anything made from recycled plastic?

Also, several links suggest washing recyclable grocery bags. But that leads to problems concerning alleged AGW from energy used to run washing machine and heat water, but also includes screwing up environment with wash detergent.
And who is going to take the time to hand-wash these bags?

Why not just ban indoor heating and electric lights as well? It’s killing the trees, you know. Customers will be required to carry their own beeswax candles (but not flash lights) to see, and dress warmly on winter days. The store itself will be made from recycled finger and toe nails. No meat will be sold of course, but condoms will be mandatory. The check-out lines themselves will take a full day to get through, since everything is free and the state can only pay for one employee per store.
