Extremists burn ancient texts in Mali

The Associated Press Posted Jan 28, 2013 @ 07:32 AMSEVARE, Mali (AP) — Islamist extremists torched a library containing historic manuscripts in Timbuktu, the mayor said today, as French and Malian forces closed in on Mali's fabled desert city.

Ousmane Halle said he heard about the burnings early today.

"It's truly alarming that this has happened," he told The Associated Press by telephone from Mali's capital, Bamako. "They torched all the important ancient manuscripts. The ancient books of geography and science. It is the history of Timbuktu, of its people."

Gee I guess that the news editors didn't have room in their headline to include that the "Extremists" are Muslims.

I have come to the conclusion that the only ways the Islamists can portray their religion as anything but the cultural plague it is, is to destroy all else, then proclaim they invented what is left.

Alexandria, Bamiyam, Timbuktu, calls for the destruction of the pyramids... always in the name of their “religion”

Who then is their god?

There are no 'good' muslims, but there are scared religionists that could, if that thought they could, stop the bad muslims from being bad.

It requires killing the bad muslims by the good religionists.

We non islamists know that killing the islamist is the only way to stop them, and unfortunately, just as a whole slew of us white kids kicked everything Americanly traditional out of our lives in the 60's, the youth of the islamist will always rise up against anything non islam.

I know this may sound convoluted, but it makes sense to me

Islam has to be denied a place and a voice in the world.

We should no longer call them islamists or muslims but satanist.

I think THAT might be a more effective way of stopping the advance of this evil.

This is indeed a tragedy. Mali is no backwater but in its day an advanced civilization. Ibn Battuta, a world traveller, who was there in the 14th century, described it as a country where you could travel anywhere without any fear of molestation or robbery. This year on the Internet someone put up a list of richest men of all time and a Mali king Mansa Musa I came in first beating out the Rothschilds.

"Timbuktu's famous manuscripts, believed to number in the hundreds of thousands, mainly date from the 14th to 16th centuries, when the city was an important hub for trade and Islamic knowledge. Often written in Arabic but also some local languages, they cover areas such as medicine and astronomy, as well as poetry, literature and Islamic law. Many were kept for centuries in private family libraries, passed down through the generations.

The city's huge and priceless cultural heritage, a legacy of its medieval status as an African equivalent to Oxford or Cambridge, complete with bustling university, was little known in the outside world, with even the French, Mali's colonial rulers until 1960, carrying away some manuscripts to museums but doing little to unearth the full story behind them.

this is terrible. Those manuscripts are the heritage of the Malian people. what was their beef? They weren’t Islamic or something? Who knows.

They are demons of destruction. Next they’ll want to find all of Ibn Battuta’s mss. and burn them.

And in other news.....

Gunmen rob Illinois churchgoers during service

EAST ST. LOUIS — Police in East St. Louis are looking for three masked gunmen who walked into a church and robbed the people attending service.

East St. Louis Police Chief Michael Floore says nobody was hurt during the armed robbery Sunday at IRA Grove Baptist Church.

Floore tells the Bellville News-Democrat that the gunmen got away with money and other items. He says investigators are working to determine exactly what was taken from the churchgoers.

The robbery was reported to police just after 5 p.m. Sunday. The police chief says the investigation is just beginning and police haven’t yet identified any suspects.

The title is wrong.

These weren't extremists, this is mainstream islam:

The Caliph wrote: "If those books are in agreement with the Quran, we have no need of them; and if these are opposed to the Quran, destroy them."
