Laura Bush: Take me out of pro-gay marriage ad
CNN.com ^ | 2/22/13 | Kevin Bohn and Kevin Liptak

Posted on 02/22/2013 12:28:10 PM PST by SoFloFreeper

Former first lady Laura Bush, who is one of three prominent Republicans featured in a new ad supporting same-sex marriage, has asked the spot's creator to remove a clip of her espousing support for equal marriage rights.

"Mrs. Bush did not approve of her inclusion in this advertisement nor is she associated in any way with the group that made the ad," Anne MacDonald, a spokeswoman for the former first lady, wrote in a statement Thursday. "When she became aware of the advertisement Tuesday night, we requested that the group remove her from it."

The ad, from the Respect for Marriage Coalition, features Bush speaking in a 2010 CNN interview with Larry King.

"When couples are committed to each other and love each other then they ought to have the same sort of rights that everyone has," she is shown saying.

Those remarks came as a surprise at the time, since she appeared to be breaking ranks on the issue with her husband, former President George W. Bush. In 2011, her daughter Barbara appeared in a television spot for another pro-gay marriage group, the Human Rights Campaign.

The spot also features clips of former Vice President Dick Cheney and former Secretary of State Colin Powell voicing their support for same-sex marriage rights. A spokeswoman for Powell said Thursday they weren't contacted for permission to use the clip, but that "his remarks are in the public domain and we have not asked them to remove it."

A spokesman for Cheney did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the ad Thursday morning. The Respect for Marriage Coalition similarly did not respond to a query on whether they would remove Bush from their spot.

I recall Laura Bush’s daugher Barbara making a pro gay ad where she spoke like a true believer.

This is why “conservatives” who live in the spotlight should take care and watch what they say. There are always libtards who will use a “conservative’s” words against them.

So, like, why, LB?
You have stated - a little late - that you are for abortion, gay “marriage”/lifestyle and have been a closet lib all this time, duping all the conservatives who backed you and defended you...
Why not tell the truth?

Pshaw! She was always a lib. It was known that she was prochoice. Nancy Reagan was, too.

The Bush daughters went to universities, so. . .

Military officers wives, famously lib. Many went to college, or, as I like to call it, succumbed to brainwashing.

They think they’re brilliant and enlightened. Wrongo. They’re submissive and vapid and they are usefule idiots in the destruction of the family.

His charming self, the late Fulton Sheen, talked and wrote much on this in a fierce manner; women and their power over societal direction.

Mrs. Bush is a nice lady, but conservative she is not. He words make it pretty clear where she stands.

Barbara spoke out in favor of gay marriage. I think the Bush women, including Laura, are all libs.

Laura even bitched about a wanted “Dead” or alive type poster for Osama. Killing 3000 Americas didn't justify tough wording in Laura's eyes.

She has drunk the mainstream Methodist Kool-Aid. About everything. Nobody can tell me she didn’t influence Bush II.

Barbara called all the shots with Bush I.

Its genetic.

If she had kept her mouth shut to begin with she wouldn’t be in this mess.

IMO, that could mean more that supporting gay marriage. I think gays should have the same rights to own property and have rights pertaining to family members...like hospital visitation, etc.

But I am definitely not in favor of gay marriage.

I am in favor of marriage before starting a family but a lot of people haven't listened to me on that one, either! LOL!

Sort of like the recipe for not getting pregnant: keep your feet on the floor and an aspirin locked tightly between your knees! LOL.

I am very tired of conservative by marriage RINO women.

I think this is a product of the inside the betway aristocracy poofta patrol staffers being too close to leadership.

It shows how stupid those elites are. they buy the total myth of “born that way” BS of homosexuals.

Laura Bush is pro-same sex marriage, pro abortion and pro amnesty. Don’t believe me? Read her autobio. Maybe she’s not liking the criticism, but too bad. She was the problem behind a lot of GW’s mistakes, but she always gets a pass from the elites.

Laura Bush’s Pro Gay Marriage comments do not belong to her, but fall under fair use.

The Pro Gay Marriage folks are free to use Laura’s statement in very much the same manner as politicians use news clips of their opponents in commercials.

I wonder if Laura is thinking that by removing herself from this add conservatives might forget what a disaster her clan has been for America. She wouldn't want to make waves when Jeb or some other Bush tries to hoodwink conservatives in a primary run for President.

So you made my point...why back off from the ad?
I happen to have been an officer’s wife for 26 yrs as well as an officer for ten... I never discussed politics with many of the wives. I’d say they reflected a cross-section of their contemporaries in the civilian world.
Get to the upper ranks and I might agree with you...
While most of us knew the positions of both Bush wives and Nancy, they never made a point of it until they left the lime light...so many didn’t have a clue.

Alot of people are doubting this is true as Laura has alot of gay friends. But there is a difference between having gay friends and endorsing gay marriage. Also, in the past she has said exactly what is quoted above. If two people love each other, they should have the same rights as anyone else. Still, again, big difference between believing in gay rights and endorsing gay marriage. I just cannot get there. The bible is quite clear.
