House Democrats propose Department of Peacebuilding

Caroline May

California Democratic Rep. Barbara Lee has introduced legislation to create a federal Department of Peacebuilding that would cultivate peace and take on the causes of violence and conflict.

Lee’s legislation H.R. 808 “Department of Peacebuilding Act of 2013″ also would create a Cabinet-level Secretary of Peacebuilding focused on creating peace and preventing violence.

“This culture of violence that we live in is unacceptable,” Lee said in a statement her office distributed earlier this month. “On our streets and across the globe, the pervasive presence of violence has infected the lives of millions, and it is far past time we address it as a nation. We invest hundreds of billions each year in the Pentagon, in war colleges, military academies, and our national defense universities all to develop war tactics and strategies.”

“Now we need that kind of investment in peace and nonviolence here at home,” Lee added.

The proposed department carries on an idea initially proposed by former Ohio Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich, who attempted to establish a Department of Peace.

“The Department of Peacebuilding advances the good work of my friend and former colleague Congressman Kucinich and has the potential to reduce suffering on a national and global scale while saving billions of dollars through violence reduction and increased economic productivity,” Lee added.

While the legislation’s text — which points out that more than 100 million people have died in wars during the 20th century and “at the dawn of the 21st century, violence seems to be an overarching theme in the world” — is not yet posted online. The Hill, which first reported on the legislation, obtained and posted a copy Tuesday.

The legislation would require the department to develop national strategies and programs to encourage violence prevention, and dispute resolution to reduce problems such as gun violence, racial and ethnic violence and violence against LGBT Americans and women.

The department would work with other agencies, sharing peace findings and assisting the international community in peace endeavors, including fostering conflict resolution initiatives.

The department would also create a four-year Peace Academy in the model of the military service academies, and offer grants and incentives for peacebuilding initiatives. The Secretary will also encourage Americans to observe and celebrate “Peace Days.”

The “Department of Peacebuilding Act of 2013” introduced Monday and Referred to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, currently has eight original co-sponsors, all Democratic.

Won’t accomplish anything worth mentioning, but it should give the Chinese and Russians a good, hefty belly laugh while Obama wastes millions more taxpayer dollars.

After the budget is balanced, we may be able to think about it.

The real agenda wrapped in all of the other crap.

Make fun if you will but this sort of thing doesn’t occur in a vacuum. These people are voted in over and over and over again. Its the electorate that the problem. Through laziness, apathy, ignorance etc we’re enabling our own demise and that of the generations to come. We’re mostly failing as custodians of liberty.

Lee is a living example of Kerry’s remark that “U.S. voters can elect any idiot they want to Congress.”

Yep. Yuk it up, folks, but the organization already exists. Infrastructure in place. Bureaucrats awaiting federalization. It’s called the Institute for Peace, and its imposing headquarters building sits on a prime piece of real estate in Washington, D.C. It sits not one block from the State Department building, at the foot of the Naval Observatory. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Make fun of it, You bet! Yuk it up, sure thing!

Mock it, ridicule it, expose it as the communist crap that it is. Barbara Lee and her co-sponsors are enemies of liberty.

But ignore it? Bad idea.

Lee is such a waste of space. A real lunatic. No one takes her seriously on anything.

The language of the bill includes this:

The Earth Charter calls upon all people to live in the right relationship to the Earth and all beings. The preamble of the Earth Charter provides, ‘‘To move forward we must recognize that in the midst of a magnificent diversity of cultures and life forms we are one human family and one Earth com- munity with a common destiny. We must join to- gether to bring forth a sustainable global society founded on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace.’’ Peacebuilding is working together with all nations to protect both life and land and hold the Earth in bal- ance.

The language is very redundant and about what you would expect from Barbara Lee, but it makes it clear that much of the effort would be domestic policy and action. Two areas deserve notice:

Gun Grabbing: It sets the stage for this department to lead the way in taking guns away from American citizens

Propaganda: A large education component of this bill will bring even more left wing partisan propaganda into our schools, all paid for by the taxpayer.

There's not a snowball's chance in hell of this bill ever becoming law, but it does provide a good insight into their real agenda.

Here's the link to the bill itself:

I wonder what means they would use to enforce the edicts of this new department. A picture comes to mind of a civilian police force, as well trained and equipped as the military. Can you imagine such a force controlled by the likes of Sheila J. Lee, Maxine Waters, John Conyers, Hank Johnson, Nancy Pelosi, or Dennis Kucinnich? How about Chuck Shumer, Dick Durbin, Van Jones, or Eric Holder? There’s already rumors that Louis Farrakan wants to arm street gangs as a way to defend NOI, what if they all had badges too? These people are scaring the hell outta me.
