Stumbo says he'll encourage Judd to challenge McConnell but wants to talk with her about coal

While some Kentucky Democrats have been skeptical of a potential Ashley Judd candidacy for U.S. Senate, House Speaker Greg Stumbo is no longer among them, saying Thursday he would encourage her to run.

“When I talk to her I’m going to encourage her as I would any other candidate that this is a winnable race,” he said. Stumbo went on to blast Republican U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, calling him “Dr. Doom” and “the father of gridlock.”

Stumbo and Judd have traded phone messages in recent days. He said she left him another message on his work phone last night.

Stumob dismissed the notion that Judd might hurt conservative Democratic legislative candidates if McConnell paints her as being too liberal for Kentucky.

He acknowledged that it might “be tough” for Eastern Kentucky Democrats to support her because of her statements against mountain top removal. He said he does want to talk to Judd about the importance of coal and show her examples of development as a result of mountaintop removal, such as the housing development and golf course at Stonecrest in Floyd County where Stumbo has a home.

But he also said that process of mountain top removal is a “dinosaur” and on its way out.

McConnell’s campaign manager Jesse Benton said the speaker’s comments indicate that he is more concerned with promoting his party than his home region.

“If we wait enough, Speaker Stumbo may oppose and then support just about anybody if his political party runs out of options. I guess he decided that protecting coal country takes a back seat to naked partisanship,” Benton said.

If Kentucky elects Ashley Judd to the Senate, I’m moving up my scheduled departure from the USA by about 10 years.

With Judd and Al Franken in the Senate we’ll be well on our way to being one of those third-world countries that stuffs it’s legislature with celebrities.

Don’t be surprised if Ashley Judd runs for the Senate, and then Ashley Judd wins. I put absolutely NOTHING past the Social Democrats/Progressives. She’s never held any elected office before in her LIFETIME, and now she wants to be a Senator???? OMG. Help us.

I know that the miners have voted Democrat for at least 4 generations but if they can’t see what the Democrats have in store for them they deserve what they get.

McConnell is not as popular as he use to be mostly because conservatives are disheartened by his caving in on various issues, so it is possible she could actually win the state. Inspite of the fact that there is no way in the lower 40 acres Obama could have won this state, the people still voted for a Democrat govenor and a Democrat Attorney General.....so guess what...Obamacare gets rolled out in Kentucky anyway. The people of this state are politically schitzofrinic(spelling). I can’t figure it out any other way.

I confess that I moved here from Seattle in 2011 to get away from this crap. However, I’ve discovered there are a lot of liberal low-information voters in Louisville, and I am dumbfounded by how many of my neighbors are living off of disability.

And the number of EBT cards I notice being used when I am at the local Wal Mart makes me wonder if I’m the only guy out here that actually supports himself.

Worked for Al Franken.

I'm guessing the GOP needs to start sending its brightest young prospects to Hollywood to get some real-world film experience before they are ready to take on political offices. /s

I have a friend who moved to KY last year from Nashville and he said that in previous visits during elections he’d see a lot of Dim yard signs - however, during the Presidential election last year he didn’t see one zer0 sign - and the area he has bought in is a heavy miners union area......so little Ms Judd may not have a senate seat handed to her!

Stumbo sounds like the same type of stupid Democrat who believed that Joe Manchin was going to go to Washington and actually advocate things that made sense for his state. If, God forbid, Ashley Judd wins, she is going to advocate a Hollywood agenda that shuts down coal plants. And Joe Stumbo will cry about how he thought she was different.

Kentuckians need to be more concerned with a true conservative replacement for McConnell.
