N. Korea threatens to pull out its workers from Kaesong park

SEOUL, April 4 (Yonhap) -- North Korea threatened Thursday to pull out tens of thousands of its workers from the joint inter-Korean industrial complex if South Korea continues to insult Pyongyang's dignity.

The latest threat comes as the North has banned the entry of South Koreans workers and vehicles into the complex in the North's western border city of Kaesong for a second straight day, though it is allowing South Koreans there to return home.

If South Korea keeps "vociferating about the zone, we will take a resolute measure of withdrawing all our personnel from the zone," an unidentified spokesman for the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland said in comments carried by the North's official Korean Central News Agency.

He warned that the fate of the shared complex is "on the verge of bankruptcy," according to the English-language dispatch.

The North also claims the joint industrial park is now only beneficial to South Korean firms and the North gains nothing from it.

They roll out a new threat everyday. Even for NK standard, this is abnormal. As for the subject matter, I do welcome that they pull out their workers and eventually shut down the place. It is way past the time we argue over ridiculous cost-benefit analysis on pulling out of the place.

Kaesong Park, NK, has free trade or MFN status with the US doesn’t it?

Imagine all of the allies that haven’t been given that yet

Poor lil Kim...If he wants to extort money out of the current administration, he will have to convert his country to Islam first.

I read yesterday that NK’s revenues from the Kaesong plants is 2 billion per year. Apart from wages of the South Korean employees, what revenues accrue to the SK government? What does is cost to run this place?

Seems like the pugnacious one is slowly, incrementally, drip by drip, ratcheting up the tensions and stakes much like two young boys hit each other on the shoulder, each raising the force of their blows until one of them knocks hell out of the other. Darn, that was a long sentence. Who’ll be the first to flinch?

I believe you are right. Chia, Jr. is close to the tipping point or already is too far out on the limb.

Our joint exercise Foal Eagle ends about 30 April, so look for more and more extreme antics by NK until then.

No ammunition has been released to NK ground units.

Somethings cooking on the China-NK border, a Chinese fighter penetrated NK airspace and overflew most of the border on 21 March. However, most of the Chinese ground units that moved to the border, have pulled back to their garrisons.

China delivered no crude to NK in February or March, for the first time in 39 months, looks like a pressure play.

If NK starts up their mothballed reactors, it would take many years to produce weapons plutonium, no threat there. NK only has enough plutonium for about 6 weapons and their blast yields todate have been very weak.

One thing of note, all the NK war posturing to date has been made by civil, government officials, not the NK military officials.

When NK has done that in the past, it has allowed NK deniability and an easy way to walk backwards as they can claim that the government was just preparing the people for martial law.

The boy will launch the mid(or long?)-range missile and want to see what happens, hoping some good news.

His rhetoric and threats went so far out of limb that climb-down could do political damage to him. He is not his father or grandfather who had absolute grip on power, and was able to climb down even if they went out of limb. The boy went even further and has less clout to up the ante so high, climb down, and go business as usual.

I think he face a prospect of far diminished power or worse.

At least one statement was made by the General Staff of NK military:

“The moment of explosion is approaching fast,” added the general staff of the North Korean military, in a statement broadcast by the nation’s official media.
