Senate Bill Aimed at Curbing Visa Overstays for Immigrants

WASHINGTON –

SNIPPET: "On multiple occasions, first after the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and again after 9/11, Congress mandated that immigration officials come up with a verifiable entry-exit system to track foreign visitors. To date, the Department of Homeland Security has failed, despite spending billions in tax dollars.

The current system, known as USVISIT, does take fingerprints and photos of international visitors when they arrive at U.S. airports, but it has no similar biometric exit system. The goal is to match entry and exit records to determine which individuals comply with their visa and sanction or deport those who do not."

SNIPPET: "Originally, the U.S. envisioned a biometric based system -- where foreign tourists, students and businessmen would provide 10 fingerprints and an eye scan when they enter and exit the country. However, it proved expensive and time consuming. So currently the U.S. only does this when visitors enter at the airport.

There is no exit control whatsoever, so officials have no idea who overstayed their visa."

SNIPPET: "The Senate bill is scheduled for a full hearing in the Judiciary Committee on May 9."

Every other country in the world tracks in and out of visa holders.
Would should have visa holders post a 50k bond when they come..that is forfeited if they don’t “check out” before their expiration date. The funds from forfeited bonds could be used to hunt them down..like bounty hunters.
Bonds would cost little for reliable risks, but 50k for those who weren’t.
Not a perfect system, but would be better than today.

“Boston probe sheds light on ‘astonishing’ problems in student visa system”

By Barnini Chakraborty

SNIPPET: “WASHINGTON – Confirmation that the students from Kazakhstan linked to the Boston bombers and arrested last week are living in the U.S. on expired or invalid student visas has exposed an immigration problem that’s festered for years.

Students flock to the U.S. from around the world. But when their visas expire, many simply stay.”

SNIPPET: “According to the Migration Policy Institute, about 40 percent of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants living in the country came here with valid visas — of all kinds — but ended up staying after their passes expired.

Under the broad umbrella of these 4.5 million visa overstays, it is not known exactly how many are students.

However, there are currently around 10,000 accredited U.S. schools, colleges and universities that accept foreign students, according to the Government Accountability Office.”

If 40 percent of the 11 million came on visas, than that means that only 6.6 million Mexicans have come. He’ll, there are more than 6.6 million Mexicans living in Southern California!

No, they won't.

Yet, this Gang of Eight bill claims it will "secure the border", "stop visa over-stays" and "normalize the illegals".

It's only the latter that everybody is objecting to. But the Gang of Eight insists we can't have a secure border and can't stop visa over-stays unless we give up on the latter.

Which, I believe, shows exactly how serious they are about securing the border and stopping visa over-stays...

These numbers are all bogus. Nobody knows how many people crossed the border illegally and nobody knows how many people are overstaying their visas. Once the bill is passed we may well find out that the number of illegal aliens in the country is closer to 50 million.

I know and work with a few people like this. It’s unfortunate they’d have to leave, but soon we’ll hear how “unfair” it is for them to come here, get their educations, their jobs, take full root in the country and then for us to ask them to leave ...

The tourism industry will cry bloody murder. I know Dubai does the same thing, but with $300, instead of 50k.

It didn’t pass. That article is 3 weeks old.

Visa overstay? What about their EBT overstay? That's getting out of hand, too.
