IIRC, he really threw himself at her hard. But for all his efforts, or maybe because of all his efforts, she never let him out of the friend zone.
Yeah she did not date him, but he was trying. In an interview I read she mentioned being in an abusive relationship at one time. Maybe she saw the danger signs and that was why.
